Title: Wake Me Up When September Ends
Album: American Idiot

Lyrics:

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

like my father's come to pass
seven years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends

summer has come and passed
the innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

ring out the bells again
like we did when spring began
wake me up when September ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

like my father's come to pass
twenty years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends
wake me up when September ends
wake me up when September ends

Fun fact: Billie Joe got so tired of everyone @ing him on twitter when September ended, he said he was considering writing a new song. It'd be called Shut Up When October Begins.

My son Jason was born on September 5, 1993.
He died 7 years later, on September 21, 2000.
For years I spent the entire month of August dreading September, and wished I could sleep through the whole month, and yeah, be woken up when it ends...
I'm better now, but this song STILL kills me, and always will💔💔💔

never listened to this song that much but my dad passed away yesterday and this is all i can think about. the last thing we said to each other was "goodnight, see you tomorrow" like we always did but this time there was no tomorrow. he was okay the day before he went to the hospital. he made me hot dogs and we all had dinner together.. and the next day he's in a coma. this world is so unfair. im only 20 years old, how am i supposed to live my entire life without my dad next to me now? ... rest in peace, daddy. i'll be strong for you. thank you for everything.

Unwritten rule that cannot be broken-This song has to be played at least once during September

He lost his dad when he was 11. "7 years has come so fast" He made this song when he was 18. I cant imagine mourning my dad throughout my childhood. I think this song really elicits that feeling of loss

Billie, the singer, wrote this about his father who tragically passed away in September when he was 10. He said, “Wake Me Up When September Ends”, to his mother when she checked on him after he ran home from the funeral because he couldn’t handle it. 7 years after his father passed, he joined Green Day, and 20 years after his dad passed, he and Green Day wrote the song.

My brother just committed suicide and with me being a huge Green Day fan and September being Suicide Prevention Month, I can't help but feel like this is all just a sick joke.

Please know that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel and it's never too late to ask for help. No matter how you feel, you are loved and important to someone.

Rest in peace Logan, I love you with all my heart ❤️❤️❤️

Never again will there be a time like the early 2000’s. I’m so glad I grew up in that time.

hey fun fact!

Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong wrote this song about his father, who died of cancer September 1st, 1982. At his father's funeral, Billie cried, ram home, and locked himself in his room. when his mother got home and knocked on his bedroom door, Billie simply replied "wake me up when September ends." hence the title

I was a fan of this song for many years. Now it is something I can totally relate to. I lost my dad in September of 2021. Today is September 1st, and I just had to listen to this. Wish I could just sleep through September and not have to relive those days. I miss you dad. You were the best one I could ever ask for.

My daughter in Middle School got me hooked on y'all. I'm now 69 and still play your music. Parents need to listen to kids music and share their music and I shared mine. Hard rock, oldies, blues, gospel, bluegrass, you name it. God bless. ❤❤

Now that this song isn't being shoved in my ear holes every waking moment by radio stations, I can actually appreciate this song for what it is: A beautiful, emotional piece about a lost, loved father.

My mom passed away yesterday and listening to this song hurts so horribly. My heart will be forever incomplete. I love you mama, you'll be loved forevermore.
