Since there happens to be a sizable variety of Kalashnikovs (and Kalashnikov-based designs), why not have all the guns with similar overall designs and design lineage be lumped together as a 'family' of sorts? It'll simplify the process of acquiring new guns and maybe even make way for new guns (e.g. The SMLE, starting from the No.1 Mk III, could branch off to the No.4 Mk I, the Lewis Gun could branch off into the FG42 and/or the MG34 branching out towards the MG42).
