Nature’s Vanishing Act: Screech Owl’s Incredible Camouflage #4k

Показать описание
This Eastern Screech Owl has been living in tree cavity at Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge in Milton, Delaware for many years. Eastern screech owls are small, nocturnal owls native to eastern North America and southeastern Canada. They are compact owls, about 6-10 inches tall with a wingspan of 18-24 inches. These owls come in two color morphs—gray and rufous (reddish-brown). Both color morphs blend well with tree bark, giving them excellent camouflage. They have large, yellow eyes and prominent ear tufts, which give them a classic owl-like appearance. Their diet includes: Small mammals (like mice); Insects (beetles, moths, crickets); Birds, frogs, and even small reptiles. Unlike their name suggests, eastern screech owls don’t "screech" often. Instead, they produce a variety of sounds, including: A haunting, descending trill. A soft, whinny-like call. These eerie calls can be heard during the night, adding to their mystique. As adults, their main enemies include great horned owls and barred owls since they are larger and more powerful owls. They can easily overpower them, especially at night when both are active. Red-tailed hawks and Cooper's hawks, particularly active during the day, can attack screech owls if they are exposed or if they discover their nest sites.
