Here we try to have an Understanding NAND and NOR Gates and Why They are called Universal Gates.

The discussion on AND OR NOT Gates will help understanding NAND and NOR Gates.

Universal Gates NAND and NOR Gates:

NAND Gate:

NAND Gate means NOT AND Gate.

That means the negation of the AND Gate.

The output is 0 only when each of the inputs is 1.

The NAND Gate will negate the output of the AND Gate.

The symbol for the NAND Gate is as shown in the image below.

The bubble in front of AND is the negation symbol.

The output of the NAND gate is

The truth table of the 2-input NAND Gate is as shown in the image below.

The output in the truth table is the complement of A.B.

Similarly, the truth table of 3-input NAND Gate is as shown in the image below.

The output in the truth table is the complement of A.B.C.

NOR Gate:

NOR Gate means NOT OR Gate.

That means the negation of the OR Gate.

The output is 1 only when each of the inputs is 0.

The NOR Gate will negate the output of the OR Gate.

The symbol for the NOR Gate is as shown in the image below.

The bubble in front of the OR is the negation symbol.

The output of the NOR gate is

The truth table of the 2-input NOR Gate is as shown in the image below.

The output in the truth table is the complement of A + B.

Similarly, the truth table of 3-input NOR Gate is as shown in the image below.

The output in the truth table is the complement of A + B + C.

Why the NAND and NOR Gates are Universal Gates?

As we have discussed in the Basic gates AND OR NOT gates that any digital circuit can be produced by using basic gates.

The problem with the basic gates is the manufacturer of the gates cannot decide which set of gates has to be manufactured.

That means using the set AND, NOT we construct an OR gate or by using the set OR, NOT we can construct an AND Gate.

Now the manufacturers are in a dilemma that which set has to be manufactured.

To avoid that ambiguity the universal gates are very useful.

Because using the universal gate [ Either NAND or NOR ] we can construct all the basic gates.

That is the reason why the NAND and NOR gates are called Universal gates.
