How do you protect yourself from a police search? Do NOT consent to a search and do NOT consent to answering questions without your lawyer present. If they have a search warrant, read over it, and tell them you do not consent to any search outside of the search warrant.

The problem with every state supreme court is that they're going by what they think a reasonable police officer would interpret something as instead of what a reasonable person would. If I say you can search this one room and the cop interprets that as searching the whole house, yeah, that's what cops do. That's not reasonable but that's what cops do. A cop can put his hands on you when you haven't broken the law and judges think that that's not aggravated assault when it actually is. So, the bar shouldn't be set at what a reasonable cop would do, it should be set at what a reasonable person would do because a reasonable person is always infinitely more reasonable than a reasonable cop.

Find out if they have a warrant. If they do, get your copy of the warrant and make sure the gun safe and it's contents are specifically mentioned, otherwise they don't have permission to search your gun safe. This also allows you to see exactly what their warrant does cover.
