Bastet is the oldest and one of the best known Egyptian feline goddesses. Her countless cat images are today one of the symbols of pharaonic Egypt. In the times of the great pyramid builders, she was worshiped as the most important solar goddess, the mother of the sun, the mother of the pharaohs.
A cosmic guardian maintaining creation, bringing the floods of the Nile, the Lady of the northern hemisphere of heaven. Worshiped especially in the Nile Delta, Bastet, together with her southern counterpart Hathor, were a symbol of the Two Lands, the empire of the Old Kingdom. She was then imagined as a divine lioness, the solar eye of the creator, although generous and gracious, yet terrifyingly dangerous.
Mythological stories of her escape from Egypt were among the most popular, her return was a reason for celebration by millions of believers. It seemed that Bastet had abandoned her people for a thousand years, but with the fall of the New Kingdom, her cult saw a renaissance. It was then that this fearsome goddess received a new, gentle face of a cat.
