Sir David Klenerman at GYSS 2023 – Next Generation DNA Sequencing

In his plenary lecture, Sir David Klenerman repeatedly emphasized the importance of hard work and collaboration as he chronicled the 20-year journey for him and his research partner Shankar Balasubramian to develop next-generation sequencing.

When asked if he had any advice on failure for young scientists, Sir Klenerman said: “The nature of research is you're doing something no one has ever done before, so it’s unrealistic to expect it to work the first time. As a young person, you just have to get used to experiments not working, and find a way to pick yourself up.”
