Medusa's backstory is very underrated in my opinion because most people just know about her infamous gaze that turns people to stone and her downfall at the hands of Perseus but I found this really interesting upon learning this because it revealed there was a lot more to Medusa than we didn't already know. It shows how tragic the character really was and how disturbing her backstory was.

There's a theory I read once, based on some of the mythology and history, that the reason why Athena 'cursed' Medusa was not revenge, but to protect herself, hence why her gaze was only harmful to men. Medusa's image was used throughout the ancient Greek world as a form of protection for women, which leads some scholars to believe that she was more of a 'patron saint' of abused women than an evil figure. Her likeness was found above such temples dedicated to women. She had two gorgon sisters, both of whom were immortal, and she was the only mortal one and also the only beautiful one in human form. As time wore on and the original mythological structure was lost, Medusa morphed into the villain we all recognize.

Imagine if someone came to visit Medusa not to claim her head but because they felt remorse for her. Perhaps a blind man who was once a proud warrior until he lost his sight in an accident and was deemed useless afterwards. Medusa would be able to actually interact with this man because of his lack of sight and they would grow a bond. He would visit her frequently and both would later develop feelings for the other because both could relate to each other’s loss.

I hate Athena for doing that to my favorite monster it wasn't Medusa fallt she got raped by Poseidon I think it was jealous of her beauty because everybody said she was prettier than her

In the end athena felt sorry for what she did cause medusa was still devoted to her even after she cursed her! So she gave her shield to perseus to help him kill her so she could finally be free of the curse! Still sad though lol

Even though I feel bad that Medusa got cursed, Athena should've been mad at Poseidon, not Medusa. But I guess gods can't punish gods.

Medusa was one of Athena's Priestess that's crazy Athena didn't protect her from Poseidon, even when at that time Athena and Poseidon was at war with one another, A goddess jealous of a mortal woman smh

They always put in the most horrendous backstory to why a person became a monster (always caused by one of the gods) and expect us to be on the Greek Gods' side in the movies. I want a damn God of War type of movie so bad. Need me to see Athena die in the worse ways twice over for the injustice she caused on Medusa and Arachne.

One version of Arachne's story is that Zeus judged who was best at weaving. The loser had to vow to give up weaving, he chose Athena and out of sympathy for Arachne Athena turned her into a spider so she could weav all she wanted without breaking her vow. As for medusa it is likely that Athena was not angry at her and did what she could to protect her.
