FULL: Pierre Poilievre breaks Parliamentary Record as he speaks for hours in House to block budget
Показать описание
On June 7, 2023, Pierre Poilievre took the parliamentary floor and embarked on a marathon speech, vowing to impede what he deemed an "inflationary train wreck." Starting his address at around 8 p.m., Poilievre set out to run the clock until midnight, making it the longest speech of its kind in recorded parliamentary history, which stretches back to 1911.
In his filibuster, Poilievre expressed his intent to advocate for the voiceless and those burdened by the rising cost of living. He emphasized the struggles faced by individuals who diligently work to pay their bills but find themselves financially strained. He likened the current state of affairs to a period of darkness, where everything seems broken and the government's financial situation appears dire.
Despite Poilievre's efforts, the Liberals, supported by the NDP, managed to overcome the delay tactics by implementing a time allocation motion. This motion restricted the debate on the budget bill until the end of the day on Wednesday. Additionally, the Conservatives' 900 amendments to the bill were consolidated into nine votes to expedite the legislative process.
According to procedural rules, both the Prime Minister and the leader of the opposition have unlimited speaking time during the budget debate. Poilievre made it clear that he would continue his speech for as long as he desired until the time allocation motion for Budget Implementation Act Bill C-47 expired at midnight.
The budget bill is expected to undergo the third reading and receive NDP support on Thursday before being sent to the Senate.
Earlier in the week, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland criticized the Conservatives' attempts to obstruct C-47, referring to them as "incredibly irresponsible" and "frankly, incredibly juvenile."
