I am a descendant of Bulgarians who fled from Bulgaria at the time when the Ottoman Empire took over the Balkans.
Prince Tervel, ruler of Bulgaria, defeated the Arabs in 718 AD during the Second Arab Siege of Constantinople (717–718).

The Arab Caliphate (Umayyads) attempted to capture the capital of the Byzantine Empire—Constantinople. Byzantine Emperor Leo III the Isaurian asked Tervel for help. The Bulgarian forces played a crucial role by delivering a devastating blow to the Arab troops from the rear, especially in the areas surrounding Constantinople, where many Arabs were killed. This battle became a key moment in halting Arab expansion into Europe.

Brilliant! Addendum: the Hungarians(Magyars) fought relentlessly against the Turks, that invaded the Balkans, for a century- no help from Western Europe!- before Hungary fell and was torn into 3 pieces (only Transylvania remained under Magyar rule). In the Middle Ages it was not just west of the Danube that was firmly Christian, the Magyar Kingdom was established in 1000 by an Apostolic King, Stephen and Christianity was embraced here (both sides of the Danube) ever since. This region suffered much under Islam - which has not been forgotten by the people and got woven into the psyche of the culture. Hence, the only country in the EU that, in spite of being demonised and punished for its position (heroically and robustly resisting the idea of open borders and Islamification), is Hungary. The Crusades are taught in Hungarian schools in the same positive light (defence) as mentioned here!

I totally enjoyed this. An academic using Arabic primary sources. Also made very clear where the East/West paradigm come from. Its also good he had no clue about the inside jokes made about AP or Winger, he has better things to do!
