The Palos Verdes blue is an extremely rare butterfly species that can only be found in one specific area of Southern California. In the 1980s, the true blue beauty was thought to have been extinct, but in later years, was rediscovered the wild, to the shock of scientists. Although biologists have begun a breeding program to help bolster the butterfly’s population, it is still considered an endangered species. With close care and nurturing, biologists hope to give this small, but mighty, butterfly a second chance at life.

This story is a part of our Planet Earth series. From mammals to insects and birds to reptiles, we share this great big world with all manner of creatures, large and small. Come with us to faraway places as we explore our great big planet and meet some of its wildest inhabitants.

We all got tricked by the butterfly. That's one gangster butterfly. Just a stone cold savage. Disappears for 10 years and shows back up like nothing happened, doesn't say a word and goes back on with its routine, ignoring us all. I wish I had the patience that butterfly does. The patience of a sniper. Waited for just the right moment to make an appearance. It worked, the paparazzi are even after it now.

Great to see extinct animals come back. The human race is great at killing animals but we need to be more eco-friendly to help prevent Extinction of animals.
