Selling England by the Pound is just too good.

This is a Review (more like a preview actually) of this album by Genesis. I just think that great music does a lot of good to human ears.

This album, I heard age 11 in 1973, cried my eyes out, with the beauty of it all. Adore Genesis.

I was quite amazed to hear this when I was 13, soon after I discovered the local FM stations. I soon heard the earlier material, and appreciate the amazing difference the ARP Odyssey made on SE, especially on The Cinema Show. So when I read that Tony was offered the loan of the synthesizer in return for writing a demonstration solo to show off the range of its tones, that made perfect sense!

47 years since I discovered Genesis and still can't stay away. Great to see another generation loving this music. Cinema Show on Seconds Out is a tour de force.

I bought Selling England, put it on the turntable and listened to the whole thing. Then, I did it again, immediately. After these first two listens of the first album by the band that I purchased, I knew I would be listening to it for the rest of my life. And I have. One of my all time favorites by anybody.

Immortal masterpiece when Genesis... were Genesis! Firth of Fifth is probably one of the most iconic composition of the whole glorious prog-rock era. What a challenge to bring young people closer to these ancient gems... thanks for keeping on : )

My favourite Genesis album. The Battle of Epping Forest is a superb track. Mick the Prick straight out the nick.

Steve hacketts playing on this album is just out of this world and for the time is just diabolical

You convinced me that I'm not alone in loving this album and seventies genesis, and in having that sense of being transported to a mythical pastoral scene.

What an epic opening!! In my so humble opinion this was the height of Genesis' massive creative talents. I saw the band on two occasions once in 1976 on their first tour after Gabriels's departure. The second was a year or so later when the band was touring on Seconds Out. Then perhaps 30 years later Iwe (my wife and I) caught Steve Hackett live playing the the entire Selling England album. At the end of Cinema Show comes Aisle of Plenty which neither I nor the audience was expecting. That hit me very hard and emotionally broke me. Anyway, you provided a wonderfully worded and passionate take on Selling England. Thank you so much!!

I always consider it the first part of a trilogy with Lamb Lies Down on Broadway being parts two and three. Selling England is the whole history of England, both political (battle of epping forest) and personal (cinema show, I know what I like). Much of early Genesis stuff is that, not just 'fairy stories' but a very 'british rendering of fairy stories'. The 'ending' of that stage is pretty obvious with almost the last line being "I see the deadly nightshade grow'. Thats the end of cultural britain, then we go on into the leading world empire, and The Lamb seems very much a 'critique' if not outright 'anti american' album, at least its imperial aims, culminating in 'the grand parade of lifeless packaging' which seems to sum up the whole thing very well. Of course it misses the fact that 'imperial england' was about doing the exact same thing to 'culture', but you cant expect brits to pick up on that.

fascinating. yes you need to leave your normal listening music aside. taken me awhile to get used to genesis. only started listening to them cos of peter gabriel cos hes got a bit of magic going for him voice and musically. I would definitely put this much as harder to get used to than pink floyd. the first alt progressive album I listened to was 'wish you were' here and I rejected it initially but it only took another day to really start loving it, but the 2 first listens I just couldn't get my head around shine on you crazy diamond. but then yes I did. genesis isnt in the same league but appreciate what they have done.

The guitar work by Hackett, especially on Firth of Fifth, is just fantastic.

Inside Genesis, Selling England by the pound is only comparable to the lamb lies down on Broadway. Outside Genesis, it's only comparable to Red (king Crimson), Animals and the wall (pink floyd). These are the five best albums made by human beings.

Favourite Genesis album but worth a listen if only for the magnificent 'Firth of Fifth.' Thanks for the reminder.
