My father died from COVID... it was a confusing relationship, we didn't always get along sometimes but we knew that the father and son love was there, and there was a lot of love. I listened to this song on the first month of his death and it attached me to him, from wherever he is right now. Only now i realized that this song was released on the day he was buried, which is also the day he was born. This song will forever be my memories of his departure, but also the good moments.

The lyrics in the beginning remind me of having a near death experience... your soul rises above your body, and suddenly you can see everything around you from above. You can even hear the people's thoughts, you can see through walls into other rooms, and you don't understand why people are panicking over a body just lying there. Then total darkness, but peace and calm, because you know that something loving is beside you. Then the brightest light reveals. A light of nothing but love, and a love you'll never experience in these earthly bodies. You then get a sense of belonging, that you were back home. A place you knew of from before you were born.

The bridge of the song is just one phrase, but speaks so much : "!I will protect your light" (The phrase of the chorus when he sings ""I won't forget your light'' that begins ''I will protect your light''), so powerful and so true. When someone we love, a friend, a lover leaves and is not part of our life anymore, we can stay in grief or choose to keep and protect that ""light"", those memories, those beauiful moments and all these things that in that relationship we changed and evolve.. and we have to take that light and continue our way with it even if it grieves. Tough the song is great, the back vocals in the chorus so powerful, but that phrase hits me so much and reminds me of everything beautiful that important people (especially special loved ones) that came temporarily in my life brought me and made me better person, I guess. And it's that to "protect that light" .. It's incredible how even when he treats sad subject, SYML always points out something positive in it.

And if I'm not wrong (I am not musician), but the chords of the songs are mainly major chords (like in the songs ""Flags""), so the melody still stays lifting up higher than the dramatic tone of the lyrics, which is also a totally genius way to approach a song, in my humble not-musician sense :D

This song raises an acute, unfathomable pain in my chest, and leaves a warm glow in its wake. It's heartrending yet hopeful, beautiful beyond words. It captures the fragile essence of loss and grief and the insurmountable task to carry on afterwards so well that I feel moved to cry my heart out. This has such _hauntingly_ beautiful vibes, a sure sense of sadness thanks to the amount of minor chords, but you keep the middle, soft, transitionary chords to achieve that superior sense of beauty and desolation. And the piano really finishes it off perfectly. It's echoey and empty. Like the song was trying to fill the empty space that the dim created, not with happiness or joy, but a common sense of misery and acceptance. Kudos to you, man, this is so insanely beautiful in it's creation
