I'm still more concerned about my wife installing spyware on my computer.

I build my own PCs from parts from newegg and the like. As long as I can trust developers of operating systems like Microsoft to protect my privacy...oh, nevermind...

But as the technology to spy evolves, so do encryption & counter-espionage technologies. By the time quantum encryption is mainstream, it's game-over for the NSA. You can't break the laws of physics.

If  they tap your phone they can get little bits of communication between you and other people.  I don't think they're even supposed to listen to conversations that are between people who are not targets of the investigation or which are not relevant to the investigation.

If they have complete access to everything on your computer and everything you do with it, that reveals a *lot* more than a few phone calls for most people.  Maybe more than a search of someone's house excluding their computers.

Not that different than tapping a phone? Gee...have them come in and install mics and cameras in the house while you have someone there providing some kind of service. It's kind of the same thing.

there is a different between wire tapping and going into your house and install a tapping device on an item that you own. I think you are stressing this a bit too much David.

What in the fuck are you guys talking about? There is nothing here that is the slightest bit legal or constitutional. How can you even spend a nanosecond of time considering that the NSA's actions here are somehow justified?

Mentioning some actions that people take during the war and trying to compare that to your governments actions against their own citizens in order to justify them is bizzare. The government should represent the people, work for them, not to fight a war against them, Also, how can something be legal, but against constitution? If it's against the most important document that the country and it's laws are based on, there's no fucking way it can be legal, how can you say otherwise?

What is the fate of the NSA going to be after the next president takes power?

easy way around this that I do with every pc. Yank out the hard drive and put in a new one. Install one of the hundreds of flavors of Linux and you're set. See, they're only installing spyware on the hard drive. Linux is very hard to break into. You could even install Zorin or another flavor of linux that was created for windows users. Guess what? No spyware on Linux.

I understand your point David. But the real question is. Who are they targeting with that program? If they are targeting criminals or terrorist I have no problem what so ever. But if they are targeting journalists and normal citizens like you and me that's another. The thing to clarify here is. Who are they really targeting?
