This should have been settled long ago by an amendment to the Constitution making it clear that presidential immunity is clearly not limitless and that it does not even apply to crimes that were committed outside the purview f the office, or outside of the period in office. In many other countries, that's what would have happened - but unfortunately in the US, the scope for clarifying the constitution in a definite and lasting way is rather restricted, so "fringe theories" and oddball readings can live on in broad daylight for a hunred years or more.
