You can freeze panes so that the left of the selected cell is frozen AND above the selected cell is frozen at the same time... Select Cell B2, then click Freeze Panes, then select the Freeze Panes option under the button (above first row and first column options). This has been since at least Excel 97.

It doesn't have to be B2, it can be whatever cell you want to split at. In fact, you can scroll down or over to get your table in the best place suited for the freeze to do what you need (suppose the first column in view is Column D for example), then select a cell and Freeze it there.
