In October 2018, School of Information students partnered with the Detroit Public Library Foundation to reimagine how city residents can engage with their neighborhood library branch.

UMSI students immersed themselves in this intensive, three-day community engagement project as part of Alternative Fall Break.

Students worked with the Detroit Public Library Foundation on a project of creating library branch extensions using upcycled shipping containers.

Students created the programming for three neighborhoods where the shipping containers could be launched.

Watch to learn more about the project and to get a look at the types of community engagement work that is a core aspect of the educational experience at the University of Michigan School of Information.
