If I want to play games, I’ve got my PS5 for that. It’s amazing how many adult children there still are.

Your word, authenticity, and mental health is worth more than any promotion, pay raise, or benefit. Do not play the game.

Love how her advice is to go run to management if a coworker complains about management. Some people never grow up

How does the saying go? “You will be promoted to your highest level of incompetence.”

This is playing the corporate game ethically. Playing the corporate game is about leveraging social and political power over people to force them to make decisions that are in your best interest. If you play well you advance to the top rapidly if you fail everyone is eager to stone you but you can always move to a new city and try again.

Or be a high level technical contributor with strong soft skills. You don’t have to work in the middle of a high school popularity contest in cultures that value the right things. Tactical and overly results driven cultures are over fixated on hyperbolic discounting tend to love this game. Higher functioning cultures that actually have some level of critical thought to how they execute, other than who is the most dominant personality on the call, value much more than self advocacy.

Also idealizing company management is a dangerous. It’s naive to think of these folks as immoral or wrong, but you have to realize that leaders do not have all the answers. They operate at a higher level for a reason, and they don’t know everything. In fact, they are relying on you to tell them where things are honestly. Finding ways to meet dates” to impress is not doing anyone on either side any good.

Leadership is not the same thing as management. Do not conflate the two.

Don’t be a brown noser. Do reject hyperbolic discounting. If your company doesn’t value you for acting in its actual best interests instead of your own, find a new company.

I’m an old gen Z who became self employed 8 years ago. Listening to my millennial friends talk about what it’s like to work corporate for these big companies sounds like a nightmare. Absolute nightmarish child behavior from people.

Excellent "textbook" discussion, while completely disconnected with harsh, savage and inhuman real "scenarios". In this age when being "pushy" is characterized as "leadership" I guess rest of the discussion is absolutely aimless. Gaslighting has become pretty much "industry standard" in corporate culture and genuine talent is considered as "serious threat" to line management. These so called games might be useful for those who are already high on the ladder and that too by the blessings of BBQ and dance parties, where all "promotion discussion" actually materialized.
For ordinary, honest and transparent professional Corporate world is a daily mental torture that one has to tolerate in order to provide food for the family.
I worked 16 years in 140 years old so called multinational company and the miseries and agony I have been through is unspeakable.
Good luck with these idealist discussions though I hope it will earn lots of viewership that I am sure is the resultant objective.

Based on my experience in chemistry and chemical engineering, knowing how to market your skills to the right people is more important than doing anything useful. I agree that your manager feels good when you work 120 hours per week no matter what you accomplish. Everybody has fantasies about having more hours in the day, so that's why corporate rewards people who work more hours in the day. Yup, I completely agree that you have to build a strong reputation of supporting other people. The most successful people I've seen in business make everyone feel good no matter the material outcome.

All valid points, and also subsequently a list of reasons why I’ll never join corporate America. Another way to put it “how to be fake to make more money”
Gross.
But this is a helpful video for those who choose this path.

I can’t believe I’m seeing this now. this level of oversight in creating communication pathways, would have saved my career. Terminated at 21 after 5years volunteering and 6 years on staff at the time and was too easily over looked over worked and taken advantage of. Little did I know I had the authority to instruct my higher ups on how to observe my success for the organization…. still as frustrated currently even with closure in hindsight.

I’m in software engineering QA with a lot of experience and the workload is already too much and the expectations are high due to my level of experience. It seems like a game to keep me from being able to play the game. I think what you’re saying works if you’re given a fair shake. Too many of us didn’t qualify due to that we weren’t raised with the social graces and understanding or aren’t any minority or just got unlucky where we started. You need to know when to give up or you’ll be used to help others achieve their goals. Please tell me how I could get promoted when minimum expectations are already very high.

I realize this is complicated and I think you’re a manager type of person. People like myself though may see that leadership needs to target the majority of workers and so we need to know when we’re in that minority that doesn’t get cared about.

Super helpful, pragmatic and wise advice. Your experience really shines through your insights. I’m taking a brief sabbatical from the corporate race, but hope to implement these when I return.
