Can We Stop Aging? An Exclusive Interview with Aubrey de Grey on Life Extension and LEV

In this compelling interview, we sit down with Aubrey de Grey, one of the world's leading scientists in the field of life extension. Aubrey, a pioneer in biogerontology, firmly believes that we can stop aging and extend human life indefinitely. His groundbreaking research is pushing the boundaries of science, and his views have stirred both excitement and controversy in the scientific community. In this video, we delve deep into his belief that we may soon achieve Longevity Escape Velocity (LEV), a concept that could change the future of humanity.

The interview is led by Daniel Kafer, a former Meta country head, now a renowned keynote speaker and author. Daniel brings a unique perspective as he explores the possibilities of living forever with Aubrey. Together, they tackle the following thought-provoking topics:

What is LEV? Aubrey explains Longevity Escape Velocity, the point where scientific advancements in health and aging will outpace the rate at which we age. Essentially, it means adding more healthy years to life faster than time takes them away.
When will we reach LEV? Aubrey discusses timelines and predictions for when LEV might become a reality and whether we're closer than most people think.
Is it too late for people in their 40s, 50s, and 60s? Aubrey addresses the hopes and concerns of older generations wondering if they, too, could benefit from these breakthroughs.
What 3 things can you do to reach LEV? Aubrey shares actionable insights into what we can all do right now to increase our chances of being alive when LEV is reached.
Funding for LEV: The financial landscape of life extension research, why it's so critical, and where we need to invest.
Skepticism around LEV: Why many experts are skeptical of LEV and how Aubrey responds to these doubts.
Join us for this fascinating conversation that could change the way you think about aging, science, and the future of humanity.

There's that part of me that still wants to believe this is true but that extremely skeptical part of my brain refuses to allow me to commit mentally one way or the other.

I would be more sad for people like Aubrey not making the cut than I would be for me not making the cut in that, he deserves to benefit from his own care for mankind.

The most important thing is getting that private equity out of bank accounts and into research labs, aswell as public funding. Almost 1trillion on defense every year but how much on longevity? It would be here very soon if we collectively decided it was time

Met Aubrey in about 2006. He was talking about his Methuselah Mouse prize, he had just awarded money to a lab tech for husbandry. Getting a mouse to live 30% longer by TLC. My own observation that mouse studies produced 25-30% improvements in LE non of which would be meaningfully translated into humans and why. We had a couple of beers over the subject. My takeaway way that Aubrey was pretty grounded in his expectation for the prospects for radical life extension.

The first person to live to 1000 has already been born.

I remember hearing him say that in a TED talk almost 20 years ago...

I'm starting with losing weight, calorie restriction and intermittent fasting, I also take metformin which is considered a longevity drug.

The thing with people taking supplements not living significantly longer... Many of them are taking supplements to try to avoid or lessen the impace of some genetic issue that they know is coming. So, maybe they're living longer, or having better quality of life than they otherwise would have.

I just want to be able to live the early life I couldn't get to live. Maybe in 15 years we will have age stabilization for 60 year old people.
Longevity escape velocity is a very confusing term because people born today have already achieved it.
The stuff we will have in 15 years will be too fluctuating to be applied to 80 year old people without a high chance of spilling into death and will be too imperfect to be an improvement for young (below 50) people. Therefore, "aging" escape velocity for 60 year old people.
Some 25 years into the future it will be aging escape velocity for people of biological ages 40-80 (bringing back to 40 in a functional sense). Here, we are already treading on wild speculation, there is no way to know the obstacles and breakthroughs.
I would expect that full age reversal will come in 35 years and will include structural fixes in 45 (without which you'd still have misshapen bones or skin, etc.). All wild speculation, it's just the time frame I feel might be most plausible or likely.
Finally, in 50-60 years it might include active genetic and epigenetic fixes to customize out defects and provide enhancements.
All of this is thinking outside a possible technological singularity but keeping the track of exponential growth, with AI simulations but without factoring AGI (AGI might take a few decades to get, ChatGPT is nowhere near it).
