Super cool you caught this on camera. You can even see the crab pulling it's back fins, legs, and claws through the semi translucent old shell.

Very cool find. It’s incredible how Crustaceans molt and regrow their exoskeleton. A very useful defense, but it does come with heavy risk. Crabs and Lobsters can get stuck during the actual molting cycle the larger they get. Molting takes a lot of time and energy, leaving the animal both defenseless and exhausted. When they grow larger, it’s both harder and requires more energy to molt, leading to the death of older individuals. Basically dying from being compressed in their own shells. Price of being so heavily armored. Catching a soft shell crab is so exciting cause of how delicious it is to eat whole.

Fun fact: crustacean and similar species are actually biologically immortal the only way they die is from predators a somekind of shell disease or they don't have enough energy to shed their old shell and they just sit at the bottom of the ocean until they die of starvation
