Q: Aren't foodborne infections and food poisoning two different things?
A: Technically, yes. In colloquial English, "food poisoning" is often used as an umbrella term for any time you get sick from something you ingest, but in more scientific terms, "food poisoning" refers only to illness caused by toxins created by organisms in the food. That's as opposed to illnesses caused by the organisms themselves getting into your body. Illnesses caused by pre-formed toxins in the food usually come and go a lot quicker, so it's not a purely academic distinction. But I decided to use the term "food poisoning" in the broader colloquial sense in this video (and the thumbnail), simply because I think it's more familiar to people.

I love that this channel is evolving into more of a food journalism channel not just a cooking creator. Your journalism degree definitely shows from the deep amount of research that went into the video.everything from your sources to contacting a professional who actually worked on compiling data. Keep up the good work!

10:54 the National Chicken Council sounds like a group of chickens who decide whether you go to heaven or hell based on how many wings you ate

with the overwhelming amount of false information about food online, having episodes like this that take a real journalistic approach to food is refreshing. keep it up Adam.

I’m in medical school right now and this is a wonderful video — not only about the study of food-borne illness, but of how research into disease works (and doesn’t work) at this scale. Really went above and beyond here.

I'm from Haiti. When I visit my American friends, they are shocked how I wash my fruits and veggies and I'm shocked how they don't wash it enough. I went through different epidemics including a large cholera one and never got sick because by default I'm cautious with food.
When I get home from the supermarket, all fruits and veggies are washed with Dash liquid soap then soaked in water that has 10 drops of bleach per gallon, then dried and stored. I had a whole room of people eyeing me last time I was over 😂...
But I think after this pandemic, new habits will form in Americans too...

I'd guess that the US's obsessive tracking of foodborne illness has something to do with the "insurance" industry.

Hey there, a chef from South Africa here. Just saying that people from the more developed countries would be utterly shocked at the degrees of food bourne illnesses/contamination we deal with. Wash your hands people 🙄

I have IBS. God knows how often my symptoms are a result of food poisoning versus just ordinary IBS (well, nausea and vomiting isn't IBS, but those are also symptoms I maybe experience once a year or less, and I go to the doctors right away in those cases). If I went to the doctor every time I had diarrhoea, I'd never get anything done... I have been trained in safe food handling (I used to work in a restaurant), my partner is a OHS representative, and I don't cook for anyone else, so hopefully my risk of spreading foodborne illness is pretty low all things considered. I'm very very strict with sanitisation, considering the amount of time I spend in the bathroom... Food safety is incredibly important, and I really appreciate you dedicating videos to the subject.

As an European who's married to an South African women, I want to say 'Thank you!' for raising awareness to this situation. It baffles me how much we in the industrial nations still tend to overlook siuations like this. I certainly wasn't aware of it.

And in general, I love how well structured and on point your videos are. ❤😊

Thanks Adam! I spent three and a half years in Senegal and Liberia with the Peace Corps working on community health and care issues. It is really important to not forget about these health disparities, especially in regard to children. Thanks for the great videos and cooking tips and for being one of the premier friends of DeSoto!

One of the things I love best about your videos, Adam, is that I feel like I'm sitting in a really informative university lecture. That's a good thing. I thoroughly enjoy being educated AND entertained at the same time.

Relatively new subscriber here from the U.K.
Really enjoying your content. It’s evident you do a huge amount or research, use facts when they are there to support and explain - but more importantly, admit there’s things we just don’t know when we don’t. Very informative and no lecturing on what we must/must not do. Very refreshing. 👍🏻
