I really like this channel at the moment because I feel like it's kind of like going back 10 years into the past to watch Matt back then. And as someone who took the full opposite approach (speak from day 1), I can "feel" the mass input theory more than I can when people just "tell" me that it's right.
I like that you say you can't speak Japanese yet. Good. Nor should you, and nor should you be able to. Accepting that speaking is a way off yet will be faster in the long run. Just most people aren't brave enough to admit that they've been doing something for 4 months without "showing" any results for it.

This really is so refreshing, for the longest time I have been searching for someone to follow from start to finish on learning a Language, just to see if i'm the only one that has hard and good times, and be it for my lack of google / YT searching skills I haven't been able to find anyone, that is till now. Glad to see your still grinding through man, you inspired me to immerse more with my spanish like a month ago (think i got about 110 hours of active immersion, was on hoildays) and through that i was able to build a habit and i swear now that i don't count the time i spend immersing, i immerse more.

as long as you don't give up, you will be fluent one day, keep up the good work! the reason most people don't reach fluency is simply because they take long breaks and restart over and over again.

Check out slice of life 'Hitoribocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu'. I'm at 4 month mark in MIA too, and when i watched it - i was able to understand like 80% of the all show. Even some japanese puns. It was very cool

I totally get you when you say you understand about 5% of japanese because i'm in 4th month of japanese learning too and when i listen to japanese netflix dramas i can understand about 4% - 5% of it only and there is a good 95% that i do not understand. I think i will stop doing passive immersion and focus more on active immersion for now.

How often do you feel the urge to make adjustments to your approach? I’m far earlier into my 40h7d journey, but I am noticing things and in turn making micro adjustments constantly. Do you make sure you stick to something for a set amount of time, or change as soon you find a technique/resource you deem to be better?

I tried watching CureDolly and had to stop watching after the first few minutes. The robot-voice was such a turn-off, mostly because it would mispronounce some pretty basic words. I also wasn't convinced with their grammar explanations, they appeared kinda dodgy.

Be prepared for your Rrtk retention to drop significantly a few months after you complete the deck, assuming you continue to review it. I remember a while ago I did the first 1000 kanji in traditional heisig RTK and my retention rate on mature cards went from 90 something to 60 something in a matter of months. So don't doubt yourself when that happens. I think it's normal.

I remember when I quit smoking I would track how much time had lapsed since my last cigarette as it helped motivate me to continue that streak. But after several months, I stopped tracking the streak because I had already kicked the habit and successfully became a non-smoker. I didn't really find any use for tracking it anymore. Now that you have a consistent study habit, do you think you still benefit from tracking your hours? At some point, won't the number of hours you spend with the language become so large, that there's no real reason to continue counting? Or are you going to track the hours forever?
