The mating surfaces on the cap and the engine block must always be clean. Any extra oil or debris can separate the cap from the block, thus giving you inaccurate oil clearance. So always be sure both surfaces are clean and dry for the most accurate measurement.

one extra step you can do to make sure a proper seat on the bearing cap is to file a chamfer on the edge. that way, if the cutter used to make the pocket in the block had a little larger nose radius than expected, the corner of the cap will clear it and the cap can seat down all the way...

I built my first engine on the cheap floor of my garage because I couldn't afford an engine stand. Once I was ready to install it, I used RTV on everything instead of the gasket because a new gasket kit was too expensive. I didn't make big power but I was able to beat anything on the road during those low horsepower days. Now shit is out of control with family cars easily making 300 hp

I bet ya used HOT water to clean it, cause that small block really shrank! 😂😂😂 Used to hate the Wheel Abrader at the machine shop that I worked as a kid, that steel shot sure gets tedious to pick out when ya don't have a tumbler.

Ever heard of someone using two different size main bearing halves to make up the measurement needed on just one main bearing? Just wondering.

I see a lot of guys do what you're doing to measure their bearings but if your cranks turned and you know your dimensions on your crank in the block's been lying honed and you know the size on that you can take those two numbers and you'll know exactly what your clearances are never seen bearings that were not what the factory said they were now you might got something boxed strong have a 10 in a 20 or 20 and a 10 but got a good machine shop you know how to read Max you don't have to waste your time doing what you're doing I got 50 years experience
