Hi Tom!
First of all, I apologize for this very long comment.
I was a computer repair man for 20 years. Even built computers I seem to remember there being a thermal issue with some graphics cards. Not sure if that is your problem but it sounds like the card is getting hot. Maybe the CPU is overheating… sometimes it helps to reapply the dielectric grease because sometimes it gets dried out. May be something to look at anyway. I found that sometimes it helps to go back and determine exactly when the problem surfaced. That may give you an idea what the problem is and if any updates may have caused the problem. And speaking of shutting off, Services, I have done that many times to solve a problem. It’s worth a try. I empathize with you on the computer problems. I’ve had many that kept me scratching my head.
I got a kick out of listening to you just talk about what all you did to update your bios. Some of the boards, the bios is not set up to boot off USB drive, but it sounds as though your computer is up-to-date, not too old it should recognize boot off of a USB. You also mentioned the EXT file system, which is usually associated with Linux operating systems. That sounded interesting. I always keep various size USBs laying around just in case.
Another thing that I have found, which helps me to identify a problem is to make a list of everything that I have tried and check them off as I go because sometimes the only way to narrow down a problem it’s by the process of elimination. And, lots of times it’s the last thing you do that solves the problem lol!
Here’s another idea, just buy you a brand new graphics card and put it in and see if that solves your problem. Then you’ll know if it’s a graphic card or not.
