I still find it funny that in iPhone 5 keynote, they said that lightning will the next port for next decade, and literally used it for a decade.

The weirdest thing is that they were one of the first ones to push usbc on macbooks (and iPads too to a smaller degree)

Its annoying that I cant use my lighting cables on my 16 anymore, but now I can charge my iPhone, Headphones, laptop for school, nintendo switch, and my Quest 3s with the same charger, so thats cool

It solves the solution to a problem of “Hey. I need a phone charger. What kind of phone do you have?” By making it all the same it solves that problem

Apple had already had switched their MacBooks in 2015 and iPads in 2018 to USB-C, it would seem like a no brainer feature to incorporate it in their iPhones. I honestly think the reason why Apple didn’t switch their iPhones was because they were afraid of the backlash from it. Apple received a TON of backlash when they switched from the 30 pin to Lightning in 2013. Apple probably wanted to just hold on to Lightning as long as possible to prevent this from happening again.

The lighting male connecter is goated by design, no weird board thing to get bent, plus it's easier to clean, but I can't attest to the quality as I've never used one.

Apple vision pro battery packs use a bigger version of it, but the vision pro itself uses the circle connector

I prefer lightning as a cable but I agree standardisation is needed and a lot more manufacturers are gonna be willing to switch to usb c than lightning

Another advantage of lighting port was that a normal person could clean the port if dust was present without damaging it unlike usb c

The main reason is rather accessories. Each manufacturer had to pay Apple a small amount per item sold that have any lightning connectivity.

That period of time where USB-C was becoming common but a lot of people still had Micro-USB phones was a pain in the ass lol

Fun fact: he said "Apple implemented the usb-c in 2024 with iPhone 15" and iPhone 15 come out in 2023 in 2024 with the 16 it was already the usb-c

Unpopular opinion: USB-C's design is inherently flawed because it puts the "male" prong plug on the device, NOT the cable, meaning 1. It's prone to break and ruin your whole port; 2. both device's port and plug are prone to collecting dust, and cleaning the device's port might break the prong, unlike the simple prong-free hole Apple used to have.

I somehow really like Lightning, as it can't get stuff stuck inside and break so easily like USB-C does

Honestly i think lightning port is actually really good. Its so durable. Arguably even durable than USB C. Port didn't had any receiver kind of flat thing that you find on usb c and micro usb

I preferred the Lightning. The inserting and then removing was much smoother, more premium feeling. Usb-c feels hardsher, less smooth, but yea, I definitely support that everything should have 1 type of plug only.

Even though I am using a Android nowadays, I will always prefer the lightning cable, it was basically a solid piece of metal, never had to replace a lightning charging port and it was so easy to clean
