Instead of using cubes for the center planks, you can also select faces on the inside of the boat and bridge them.

I've been trying for an hour now and after doing bevels, my boat looks more like a bathtub than a boat when I use subdivision surface modifier. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but a bit more explaination would've been nice

at 0:27 you said set thickness to 0.4 yet you actually set the thickness to 0.04

Honestly, bad tutorials, the polycount is terryfying, you got a huge fan on the bottom of the shipe (a vertice that is joined with way to many vertices) and you didn't even show the texturing part. In any case, even if you did, the end result would be useless unless it's for a short render. Guys, don't follow that tutorial, there is a lot of free content that will teach you the art of 3d modelling way better and actually will give you a great understanding of topology and topology rules.
