I imagine their background work with the steam link and now steam deck probably frustrated the devs how annoying it was to mess with wayland compared to X11, despite being the "newer & better" protocol.

Valve has a lot of experience in these types of issues. There own structure is so open, they must have similar processes in place to get things done.

Valve could easily pay a handful of developers to fork the project; essentially do a hostile takeover and every modern desktop distribution would be happily defaulting to it within 6 months.

All I know about Wayland is that, after trying several times before, I've finally being able to switch to using a Wayland compositor this year (Hyprland, which is great by the way). 16 years after Waylands first release. If it takes you 16 years to produce a usable piece of software, *something* isn't right there...
