Trataka; to gaze
Trataka is a kriya with multiple Benefits. Traditionally, yogis have practised it in different ways not only for its beneficial effects on the eyes but also for its tremendous effect in improving concentration.

Cupping the eyes is practised after completing the practice of Trataka. It is a way to relax the eyes after eye movements.

1. Stand or sit comfortably erect without taking support where you can see either the rising or setting Sun. Alternately choose the moon, any star or a planet.
The sequencee of steps:
1. If the Sun is the chosen object, there will be a small window.
2. Gaze at one point within the rising or setting Sun, (which is red and not too bright) till comfortable.
3. Stop when eyes grow weary, teary or the tendency to blink increases.
4. If the chosen objects are in the night sky, gaze at them as long as possible.
5. Close the eyes and gently cup or palm the eyes.
6. Recommended practice:
7. 1. Practice daily for 2-5 minutes, as per individual comfort.
Limitations:
⁃ not recommended for serious eye disorders, glaucoma and high myopia.
⁃ This exercise is not suitable for people with psychic problems- schizophrenia or hallucinations.
