A couple of years ago I decided to try a solar watch. I have a Citizen Flieger style that I use as my grab and go. I do a lot of hiking and I wear a Citizen Aviator when hiking the hills. You have peaked my interest and I will take a second look at Seiko.

The anti-reflective coating makes the glass of the Seiko Astron so clear that in comparison the glass of the Seiko SBPX seems blurry 😯

Been interested in Astron for a while but many are large. Love this one. Please compare Astron vs a Grand Seiko. Similar price points.

Never been a Seiko fan, except a few designs ( id don't own any) but that Astron is pretty sweet looking and clean but that dial is so nice!

When I think of a High Accuracy Quartz watch, I think of a thermo-compensated movement. I don’t think of battery-powered since that isn’t a prerequisite for a HAQ whereas thermo-compensation basically is a prereq to achieve +/- 10 sec per year. To me, the Astron vs a HAQ is primarily about a GPS controlled movement vs a thermo-compensated movement. A good matchup could be the Astron vs Citizen AQ1020-51E Eco-Drive Titanium where power source, metal, and price are more or less even. I find a movement that can measure time independently within 10 seconds per year more desirable, but I could also understand someone preferring GPS which is interesting in a different way and more accurate albeit reliant on another more accurate clock somewhere else.

The GPS movement comes with larger cases and a lot of expense. I can understand the case size, because for GPS to work it probably is storing a global location database inside; What I can't understand is the exceptional price on the Astron or the Citizen Satellite Wave/Attesa, because I can remember portal navigation units for cars costing a lot less. The expense I think is the biggest barrier for Astron.

SBTM323 would be a good comparison to the astron.

I've used my citizen eco drives in the water, swimming, beach, etc neither had a screw down crown. Never an issue with water resistance.

I find many of the hodinkee videos cringe worthy. Thank you for continuing to do videos in a wide range of prices and from micro to big brands.

Man, that's one lucky kid. Personally I had my fair share of timex digitals at that age.

Very nice watches! One of my boys is in 5th grade, too, and I gave him my titanium Zelos Swordfish. He loves it & wore it 24/7 for the first few months. Now he only wears it during the day! My other boy in 7th grade I gave a Citizen EcoDrive to; he’s not as drawn to it. Batting .500 isn’t bad, right?

I'm wondering if the SBPX147 dial color is black with a hint of gray or completely black?

The sbpx147 dial colour seems to be a bit greyish rather than completely black, and I'm wondering if that's actually the case or if the light reflection makes it look that way.

Swapping a $10 battery out every 2-3 years is a problem but servicing an automatic at $200-$300 a time every 2-3 years is OK ??

Bro rounds up from $1, 500 to $2, 000😂

What happens if one presses the buttons on the Astron while it is wet, or even accidentally when submerged? Will it take in water? I don't get it with these watches with pushers and swimmable or more water resistance. Does that figure hold only if you wait until the watch is dry before you operate the pushers, or what? I like this Astron over the SSJ005. But I might still go for the SSJ005 because it has indented pushers so to say, that you need a tool to operate and can't actuate accidentally.

I love my Astron. I also love my Quartz Aqua Terra. I bought a Formex Essence that I love, but Hodinkee does not cover it. Zelos and Axios, no coverage. I think my $325 pink Axios pathfinder mops the floor with the Baltic MR01, yet no one ever spoke of it. Anti-Quartz hysteria I tell you, with a healthy anti-Asian bigotry as well.

Please check out the recently released 2023 Astron models. Those are completely redesigned and way better than this one. Cheers.
