Did you know that The Spirit of Butts' Farm was the first model aircraft to cross the Atlantic Ocean in 2003? The aircraft was launched from Cape Spear near St. John's, Newfoundland and landed at Mannin Beach in Ireland 38.9 hours later. The model plane was powered by a small 4-stroke 10cc engine using up on 1 gallon of fuel for the entire flight.
It was recognized by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale as a double world record flight for its duration of 38h 52 min 19 sec and straight-line distance of 1,881.6 mi (3,028.1 km) using an autopilot.

1 gallon of fuel for over 3200 km. Thats the economy. I want that engine in my car.

imagine being on a cruise ship in the middle of the ocean, and all of a sudden an RC plane flies by

imagine the lonely little guy flying across the ocean at night.

You know this guy is a legitimate captain when he correctly pronounces the FAI’s abbreviations

To be counted as 'legal' RC-Plane they had to stay under a limit of 5 kg (~10 pounds) . The airplane was build of traditional materials (balsa + wood) and this was the 5th attempt they made, with identical models.

I remember Maynard Hill was the guys name, Model Airplane News ran the story.
He had a number of aircraft fail until he finally succeeded . The engine was an Enya .60 four stroke, modified to run on petrol ( Gas ) with the carb being from a O.S.Max .10 I think… must have had a spark ignition and Hall effect trigger added as well.
As for the ‘ auto pilot’ I don’t recall much at all, in fact, I think it was extremely rudimentary. I do recall that the model ‘squawked’ it’s position at intervals that was received by an orbiting satellite and this allowed them to plot its track.

Maynard Hill was a legend in the Aero modelling scene in the USA, held many other records and was significantly involved in charity work with young modellers.

You know all real aviation enthusiasts love rc planes and EVERYTHING that gets us closer to the thing we love

I feel like the 3200km on one gallon of fuel should be another record

That's amazing! I wonder how it handled the weather

James May got a glider to do 22 miles and that was epic, this is beyond that, well done Spirit of Butts Farm crew

When you think about it, that endurance is amazing. I fly Drones and even the DJI Matrice only has a battery life of maximum 40 minutes.

How did I not hear about that before?!

This is why I love remote control technology. Making a small craft do an automated task such as crossing the Atlantic is badass.

That's one ticket for ETOPS certification 😂

1 gallon of fuel, that's 4.5kg or so, that's a lot of weight for a small plane to carry ..

i remember reading about this when it happened in a RC magazine, if i remember correctly it was called TAM 7 Trans atlantic model 7th attempt
it came in on fumes and was a bit to lean on the flight but it just barely worked out in its favor with economy, the auto pilot took it across the ocean but a pilot tuned into the plane to land.

This makes emergency drone delivery to remote islands more feasible tbh.

That's indescribably awesome. I'd like to know more about the autopilot system. Was it an off the shelf solution, or did they build it themselves.

Sigh. Looks like I'm gonna go down a weird RC plane rabbit hole. Wish me luck.
