can you do this with a letter value? ex. if the values in column a have h then the value in column c would be "yes"?

I need yr help...i have to insert an IF function for cost of a jewellary item..the condition is if a student persobalize the price and *yes* is written in personalized column then add 5% tax... And if *no* is written in personalized column then student has to pay a base price...how can i add this amount in original amount by using if function...
