This is a Motormouth couple car review of the updated 2022 Chevrolet Equinox compact SUV. What’s new? This updated 2022 Chevrolet Equinox gets an updated front end with a new grille, headlights, front and rear bumpers and a new RS model. It has a sportier style with black 19” wheels, black exterior accents and black upholstery with red stitching. The top Premier trim has body colour door handles with chrome surround and two interior colour combinations including, jet black perforated leather and jet black with Maple Sugar. The Chevy Equinox comes with a 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission, 170 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque. FWD and AWD options are available. We are driving the LT AWD model in Blue Glow Metallic with a jet black cloth interior. It comes standard with a 7” touchscreen, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a manual driver and passenger seat, power liftgate, heated steering wheel, LED headlights and 17” wheels. Our test model has a few extras like 18” wheels and the True North Edition package for over $3,700 CAD which includes, a panoramic sunroof, 8” touchscreen with navigation, front and rear park assist and blind spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert. Price as tested, $36,643 CAD. This Chevy Equinox gets a great quality and reliability score from JD Power of 81/100. The Chevrolet Equinox is a spacious compact SUV with plenty of front legroom but competitors like the Tucson, Forester, RAV4 and Rogue all offer more front row space. The second row seats do not recline or side, but are very comfortable but one area the Equinox falls short is in cargo capacity behind the second row and overall cargo space; it is one of the smallest in this class. The Equinox FWD model starts at $26,498 CAD/$25,800 USD, AWD $28,898 CAD/$27,400 USD, LT FWD $28,598 CAD/$26,900 USD, LT AWD $30,998 CAD /$28,500 USD, RS FWD $30,100 USD, RS AWD $33,798 CAD/$31,700 USD, Premier FWD $31,000 USD and Premier AWD $34,798 CAD/$32,600 USD

Man! The hatred for GM, Chevy, and the Equinox in this comment section!

Well, I don’t hate it. This is actually my favorite airport rental vehicle. Everything in it just works well and is very easy to use. No weird quirks, no hunting through touchscreen menus for basic functions, just get in and drive. Handles well. The engine is a bit weak, but press it and it will go. Yeah, it has a rental car interior. So what? It’s functional and has all the gizmos I need.

About once or twice a year I consider buying one. Haven’t yet, but might. Especially since big rebates are back on these (at least in Southern California).

I’ve owned cars from almost all the major carmakers. After many positive and negative experiences, I value function over form. I think of the Equinox as a good appliance family vehicle, the automative equivalent of a reliable fridge or microwave or washing machine.

I was in a fully loaded one of these recently (a few days ago) and I have to agree with your overall impressions on this CUV. It was quieter than I expected, not really underpowered, smooth over most tarmac imperfections and pretty damn sharp looking. It would look great in almost any driveway, especially for it’s price. Thanks for the video.

I had one as a company vehicle. Nearly 3 years and 142, 000 km without a single mechanical problem. It was also great on fuel. A competent vehicle overall, nothing exciting or groundbreaking in any way. It was heaps more reliable than the Hyundai Tucson I had before the equinox.

We've had ours (1.5L) for two years. That's two NW Ontario Canadian winters. It hasn't made it through ONE full winter yet. First year (less than 5 months old, January 2021) the intercooler/PCV froze up driving to work (100km commute each way), throwing engine codes and going into limp mode on hills. In and out of the shop for two months. Finally the front AND rear crank seals blew out because on top of the freezing, the waste gate solenoid was sticking and it overboosted. Fancy electronic grille shutters were installed. By the time we got it back from the engine replacement, it was April. Fast forward to the following January (2022), first drive to work after Christmas break, hit a hill, check engine light, limp mode ... deva vu. Take it back in, froze up AGAIN. The fancy active shutters failed in less than a year. The new warranty fix was a $27 fabric cold front to cover the grille physically. Something I had asked for almost a year earlier and was told they didn't have. Parked the Equinox for the rest of the winter and drove my Santa Cruz until it warmed up.

Other than that, it hasn't been bad - but that is pretty MAJOR! We literally don't trust us to get us to work if it's below -23. Around here, that's November through March. Not great for a commuter vehicle. Gas mileage has been good though, as high as 6.3L/100km in the summer. I found it reasonably peppy, but far from sporty. It feels like driving punishment vs. my Santa Cruz. The rubber band automatic is a world apart from the exceptionally quick shifts of the Hyundai DCT.

For what it is ... it's okay, but we're looking forward to getting rid of it. I would take a Tucson over this ANY day. But when we bought, the current gen Tucson wasn't out and the old one was smaller than we wanted. Next time around, I'm heavily leaning towards the Ioniq 5. It's about time to go electric on our next vehicle.

Nothing too excited about an equinox but they're nice vehicles. There's a reason why fleet and rental companies purchase them. They're priced well, easy to maintain, and overall reliable. A lot of you guys hate on American manufacturers but there are a ton of first generation equinoxes on the road til this day. Moral of the story.... If you take care of your car, it'll take care of you.

We just picked up the RS model fully loaded and yes heated seats at a later date. But GM gave us 13 months of the Chevy app to start and lock your vehicle. Also GM gave 3 months of Onstar as well. This is my wife’s vehicle it is very comfortable rides very nice as you said. It drives quite well for the 1.5 engine as well as very good gas mileage. For the size of the Equinox it works well with all 3 of us to go anywhere. This weekend in Calgary and 340 km and still above half a tank too. Nice review too

I'm currently driving my second Equinox and like the one before, I have over 100, 000 miles and neither had any major issues. Keep up with oil changes and general maintenance and they'll be reliable. My wife has a 2020 and I'm not impressed with it, but surprisingly the 2022/2023 Equinox is on my list but it will have to be the fully loaded RS for the sporty look in and out. Of course I love the Blazer but I need a little better gas mileage and the Equinox gets 31 hwy which works for me.

Finally a car review that actually details the ride quality. Kinda the baseline for any family car. Kudos!

Thanks for another GM review. Except for going to airport rental lots, I almost forgot Equinox still available other than fleet sales. Even if Jeep's build quality and long-term reliability aren't "supposedly" to be as good as Chevrolet and Ford, I still would rather have a Cherokee than both the Equinox and Escape. Cherokee's ride quality is superb, exactly like a premium SUV does.

In the meantime, I would stick with a CX-5/50, CR-V, RAV4, Rogue and Forester. Even Tiguan which isn't known for long-term reliability have a much better driving experience than the Equinox. That's despite it will have plenty of GM factory rebate.

We bought our 2022 new and it is 100% better than our Toyota Camry was, and 300% better than the Kia we bought new, and after 6 months sold it. We bought ours with a lot more options and we still love it after 2 years.

This car and it's Plastic Fantastic is great for families with kids that are rough and tumble. Love that Pano roof 👌

Great review. I just leased the Equinox with the RS trim and I love it. Here in the US, the MSRP was about $31k which includes the driver confidence and convenience II package. I only wish the 8 inch screen was standard or they reduced the bezel on the 7 inch screens.

I used to have a 2010 & 2013 Chevrolet Equinox SUV. Large interior and V6 power. Ever since the new smaller design & less power engine, I've turned a blind eye to this vehicle now. Might as well spend the extra $$$'s and buy a Blazer.

You know that GM used to have a hybrid SUV at one point, right? The Saturn Vue! I would've looked at the Equinox if it had a hybrid.
The Equinox would be great if it had the interior trim pieces from the Terrain but kept the normal shifter. The wierd buttons on the Terrain was the solution to nobodies problem.

I have 2021 Equinox LS. There is a only one problem regarding radio screens shutdown. Dealer replace new one radio control unit under warranty. This car is much better than Kia or Hyundai which has a lot of 🔥 recall. Rav4. With water leak on the roof. Cx5 has small window. CR-V could be the best one but I would like to wait for redesign.

I’ve never driven a Chevy but I’ll have to check this out. I’m used to driving Volkswagens but they tend to be pricier. If it drives similar to a Volkswagen then I’ll consider buying this.

This was a really good review of a basic vehicle, the kind of vehicle that is all that lots of people want or need.

I don't get the reason for the obsession for soft touch materials to be everywhere in a vehicle. Especially the top of the dash and the interior sides of the doors. Some padding is nice where it's needed. But why in other areas that you won't be touching/resting on?
