English Cream Tea: Cucumber Sandwiches - Crumbs

There is nothing more English than a cucumber sandwich - except maybe home-made scones. Thankfully we have both! Make your own proper traditional English cream tea. Please let us know if you do.

We have cucumber sandwiches at bridal showers here in Texas but we do use cream cheese and fresh dill. Yummmm.

Oh thank you for doing this. When I was young at my family reunion in Oregon. I had a Great Aunt who was from England. Who made this for tea time. I miss it and thank you for showing how to make it. Plus she made two ways the one you showed and one with cream cheese.
I loved hearing her talk and the way she did things.

Thank you for showing me that I'm over here in the US sandwiches are made with you know a lot of mean and pimento cheese and stuff like that and lettuce and tomato and all that I fix mine with a little bit of chicken pimento cheese and a little bit of egg and then slice two sandwiches for like party stuff like that or the traditional Ritz crackers salami with cheddar cheese

The cucumber sandwich is the height of British excellence.  Just below that I would rate a cress sandwich.  My French spouse really does not understand why I might ask for a vegetable sandwich sometimes.  My best to you.

In Mexico we do make sandwiches with cucumber, but also we add lettuce, mayo and ham so, I think this is going to be a funny experiment to do to a sandwich 😁

Very appropriate video, even without the cream cheese, which would give a rather special look and taste for the finished product. Kind of offended that you said that cream cheese is only for kids parties, I have you know I am forty three years old and I thoroughly enjoy cream cheese, parties, and kids!!

Ugly American here, but I grew up in the South, which I think has held onto certain English traditions longer than other parts of the US. I LOVE cucumber sandwiches, although my family made them quite a bit differently. Lots of mayo, a leaf of lettuce, a couple of tomato rounds, plenty of paper-thin cucumber slices, salt and pepper, and a nice covering of fresh Parmesan cheese (my heritage is Italian, after all!). Don't knock it 'til you've tried it--it's SO good!

Hi. Sorry for the late comment (as you did publish this 9 years ago). Youve made a good point about the cream cheese. I agree it can become moe about the cream cheese whereby the cucumber becomes the minor ingredient. So maybe just a thin spread of cream cheese with some fresh dill as they do go well with the cucumber making sure not to overpower it. Good video. 👍.

Do you butter both sides or just the side with the cucumbers?

Instead of butter i use cream cheese or chive flavored cream cheese.
