The word Janitor comes from the Latin word “Ianua” (no J’s in Latin) meaning door. A “Ianitor” was someone who guarded a door. You can see why we still use that term today for someone who works as a custodian.

The Roman god Janus was named after the door, not the other way around. The month January was named after the god Janus, but it was named after him because of his connection to the word door in Latin and the symbolic nature of doors as the entrance into something.

Khaki from the Persian Khaak- dust.
Pronounced khaa-ki.
It became popular during the first Anglo Afghan war. Rifles were becoming more accurate and British redcoats made you an easier target. Moreover maintaining dust coloured clothing is much easier in a dusty environment.

I think that is also why the first month of the year is named January. It is the doorway between the last month of last year and the new year that follows.
