An Introduction to Simulacra and Simulation

Images are taking over reality. A Nike swoop isn't just a swoop. It means Just Do It. It means colin kaepernick. It means shoes. It means sweatshops.

Coca Cola isn't just a can of pop. It's "open happiness". It's Santa at Christmas.

Jean Baudrillard can explain all this to us and Simulacra and Simulation is perhaps his most important book.

Professor Dylan DeJong earned his PhD in Humanities from York University specializing in critical theory, comparative media studies, and posthumanism. In this lecture he explains what we can learn from reading Simulacra and Simulation.

Great intro, a very difficult but at the same time simple concept to understand. I am unsure if the translation helps either... I would also be keen to understand Baudrillard's take on the modern 'social' landscape with to him alien landscapes such as social media inc Youtube, fake news industry and identity politics, we are living in the cesspit of a once meaningful species. Or are we?

Ur sex, gender, sexuality, what you eat, skincolor, poltics.
All these superficial things. Labels. Are their identity now.
Empty shells with labels.

What does the opening statement actually mean? "The simulacrum is never that which conceals the truth—it is the truth which conceals that there is none. The simulacrum is true."
