Those shifts are HUGE | Tina Guo #johnwilliams #shorts

Shifting accurately and smoothly is one of the hardest things to do on the cello. How do we actually get to the note we need to? How can we ensure accuracy? Well, as star cellist Tina Guo explains, a lot of the time we need to think about the preparation for the shift-- the small motion that happens right before we move that loosens the arm and puts everything in place.

The most technically proficient musicians always manage to make complicated/awkward passages really comfortable/almost intuitive to play. It’s all about listening to your body and recognizing that some positions lend themselves naturally to certain physical feats. What a great showcase from Ms. Guo ☺️

I wish she was my sister. I love her like a brother loves his sister.

Siempre he intentado encontrar la manera correcta de explicar este movimiento y con la pelota de baseball creo que va a quedar clarísimo. Muchísimas

I've actually noticed this while watching violin covers, there seems to be a similar thing with playing the harp

Are you using a full size cello? Or something smaller? I'm trying to figure out what cello size is good for me. I'm also a petite asian woman. I'm currently practising on a full size, but wondering if a 3/4 would be better. Thank you for your input.

Correct. This helps you get your arm over the cello.

I tried playing my violin like a baseball. I accidentally threw it out of the window

Different movement for big man vs small woman

I'm a little scared someone will take this the wrong way, but your outfit choice made it really easy to see the anatomy of the movement.

I never understand how you know wher to finger the neck of stringed instruments that dont have built in metrics like the guitar's frets or banjo's inlays or i think the one that lies in your lap is called a gretchen or a steel but also has i think frets um but am also speaking as a man who very very poorly only plays or has any knowledge about the piano and who's primary musical ability is in the instrument i had without external cost because i grew up in poverty and couldnt afford any instrument but my voice...

how do you know where to finger the cello, or is it um... idk no it must be a way to know a must be crucial because you precisely matched the same note at start and throughout eachand every slide... how?

I think this is a good tip, but I don't think the throwing analogy is particularly helpful. Shifting up is really the complete opposite of throwing. Rather than putting power into the motion, it is a case of relaxing and letting the hand 'fall' down the instrument under gravity, or even restraining that natural falling somewhat.

The usefulness of the "circular motion" here comes from the simple fact that is that if you don't lift your elbow up before you shift, your hand will hit the body of the cello, preventing you from making the simple, linear motion you want.

But you're not really doing that when you shift for real. You're obviously not doing that.
