How To Time - An Aegisub Timing Tutorial Part 2

This is just something that I decided to make because a lot of people were asking how to time videos for fansubbing.

Thanks for the time you took to do this. I find tutorials difficult to follow usually even if they SEEM simple enough but you really did make it easy to follow along. You can click the little cursor underneath the video and use the right/left arrows to step forward or backwards by frames. No need to guess frame numbers.

For alpha-timing, right-clicking the two lines and selecting "Make lines continuous (change start)" accomplishes the same thing as manually checking and entering the times.

Press "g" to commit timings. The entire left half of the keyboard (qwert asdfg zxcv) has functions that will save you time.

@that1guytim I wouldn't say it's an alpha-timing option; more of a general tool for connecting lines together. It's useful for closing small gaps between lines (fixing "flash") or removing accidental overlaps between lines.

Yes, Aegisub is just for making "lines" you it doesn't contain any video. you have to use many other programs for loading subtitles and for weight.

@rizegahiTV That's something completely different from this. You're talking about encoding or muxing. You can add the subtitles to the video in different ways. 1. Hardsub - This is where you encode the video with the subtitles so that they're part of the video and you can't hide them at all. To do this, you need something like virtualdub or megui and avisynth. Just google the programs and look for tutorials. Your AVS script would be something like:
AviSource("video.avi")
textsub("subs.ass")

You can also do this by muxing the video using MKVtoolnix's MKV Merge program.
With that, you just drag your video in and your subtitles in. If you're using a special font for the subs and you want others to be able to see the subs with the same font as you, you'll have to add the font as an attachment and then hit mux.

for codes you must put these - {\} - and if you like to make alpha like just the bord or the shadow you can use numbers like this - {\1a&H55&} -
1 - for the word "inside"
2- for karaoke
3- for bord
4- for shadow

@Zalis116 Ah, I didn't know that you could step through the video like that. However, frame timing in Aegisub is definitely not reliable as the decoders usually aren't frame accurate. However, it's pretty damn close so you could do it in Aegisub and then just check it in something like vdub or avsp to make sure the frame timing is correct.

Has that alpha timing option always been available? I don't remember it being in there, but that definitely saves hassle and time. Thanks for the tip.

You can add the subtitles to the video multiple ways. The easiest being putting them into an MKV container that holds the video and the subtitle file. You'll need to get the MKVtoolnix (I believe).

If you want to actually compress the video file and add the subtitles to it at the same time, you'll want to learn how to use AVIsynth. My suggestion would be to google for "How to encode a video with subtitles in AVIsynth"

@therox94 Most definitely. All you would need to do is make two different lines with whatever you want it to say and then time them so that they show up when you want them to. After this, look at the far left for the second icon from the top to the left of the video. It's what's being used in this picture: Now, after clicking that, you should see a box appear above your subs on the video, drag it to where you want them to be.

You can use vdub to accomplish this, but I'd rather use Megui to hardsub a video. I only use vdub to do a lossless pass of my filters and then I add the subs and compress it using Megui.

Either way, using Megui or vdub, you'll have to use avisynth and VSFilter's "textsub" feature to add the subs.

Yes, there are many keyboard shortcuts. I think I mention in a comment on a different part where they can find the list and adjust it.

Thanks for the comment though. Hopefully others read it and learn a bit more. I should probably update the tutorial with a newer version sometime with a few more advanced tips, but this tutorial gets the job done for beginners and gets them going, which is what I wanted to achieve.

1 question, after this u just made the subs right and after that u gonna need another program to put the video file and the subs together in 1 single file ??, and after that if u want u can use another program to make it lighter ?? thats what i understand lol, aegi makes the subs, another program joins the subs with the video file, and then another program makes it weight less or compress it right '? im not sure, ??
