When a spontaneous summer trip becomes a journey to find each other

Victor, a Greek ex-diving champion in his early 20’s, lives with his grandmother in a seaside town in Greece. Missing out on his triumph days and tired of working at a furniture factory, his life suddenly changes with his grandmother’s death. Driving an old dusty car, he begins a road trip to Germany. On the boat to Italy, he meets Matthias, an adventurous young German, who is on his way home. Matthias persuades Victor to take him along and, as they drive north, Matthias pushes him to come out of his comfort zone and reveal the real reasons behind his trip. Victor's uptight character clashes with the more free-spirited Matthias. When their journey comes to an end, through the unpredictable turns of life, will their questions find the answers they so much long for?

Gay themed films are not generally my gendre, even though I am gay. I saw it compared to "Call Me By My Name" and thought, "Meh, I could barely sit through that one". But I watched "The Man With the Answers" anyway. I was HOOKED in the first few seconds! The character, Viktoras, looks, sounds, moves, speaks, and has all the same mannerisms and attitude of my Czech ex-husband...I simply could not turn away from the screen. The film is extremely personal to me. The entire film reminded me of our roadtrip through the Czech Republic. Moments of unexpected fun, and days on the road (in a ragged out Skoda) learning more about each other through a wall of mistrust, infinite questions, and trying to teach eachother our languages. We even had a similar situation where he pulled over to the side of the road throwing all of my stuff out of the car trunk, and another joyful experience similar to the wedding scene. It kind of freaks me out. But it was also on that trip that we fell in love somehow, and eventually married... then divorced 7 years later. I found the film to be refreshingly REAL for a gay-themed movie. The chemistry between the two actors is amazing. The scenery is stunning, and the soundtrack is exceptional. I cannot recommend this film enough! I saw it every night for 3 nights, then bought the film on Amazon. This is the ONLY film I have ever purchased, not just rented. By now I must have seen it 50 times, I still watch it once a week. However, I thought the ending was a bit abrupt. I would have liked the director to take it a little further. I read comments on other sites that people want to see a sequel. I don't. This movie tracked a part of my life, and it was not "happily ever after". Mathias makes one comment during the wedding scene that tells me that this wouldn't be a happy ending either. I hope it finds it's way into the American mainstream market. It is beautifuly done, and not "so gay" that it would limit its appeal to a larger market. LOL, the soundtrack! Vita Sociale by Canova is an incredible and appropriate song for the film. I do not speak Italian, but I know what the song means. Within 3 days of watching the film the first time, I had phonetically learned the lyrics. Everytime the song comes up on my playlist, I sing it at the top of my lungs and remember the great times on that roadtrip with my ex-husband.
