In this GCSE Chemistry revision video, Hazel describes how to make an ester from a carboxylic acid and an alcohol, plus what solvents and catalysts are needed for the reaction.

These videos are designed to help with your GCSE science revision.

Hazel completed her undergraduate degree at St John's College, the University of Cambridge. She then did a PGCE (Post-Graduate Certificate of Education) before qualifying as a science teacher. She now works full time as a professional tutor.

These videos are revision tutorials specifically aimed at Edexcel IGCSE but can be used across all exam boards. Material required for A* is included.

hello! i have a tiny question if u don't mind me asking..how do i identify the ester when only the formula is given? like when 3 carbon atoms are given i know the alcohol is propanol but what about the acid..? sorry for the trouble and hoping for a fast reply.

Does it matter if when writing the formula you count all the carbons together instead of writing it out like structure? So writing c2h4o2 instead oh ch3cooh

i have a question though and its quite urgent as my exam is tomorrow : in class we learnt that its the carboxylic acid that is the -yl compound but here you are telling me that the carboxylic acid is the -anoate compound ?? Are there different answers for different exam boards (im edexcel) or one of you or my teacher has made an error ?

Just so people know, for current (U-A*) AQA spec you only need to know the ester ethyl ethanoate. You probably need to know the others for 9-1 spec, and other exam boards
