The knowledge is worth it I finally got them after 8 years. I personally sucked at taking test so I was afraid of taking them but I finally did it. My hands on experience at Pepboys and Chevrolet really helped

I was actually just debating if it was worth it getting a few more ASE certs myself. I currently have 4 but I'm struggling to justify getting a few more. It's $45 per test plus a $34 registration fee, that's $79, plus study guides and time and effort. The only time they have come in handy for me is during a job search. It seems to be a definitely plus to have at least a couple during a job application.

I think that if you’re a tech in the dealership world, ASE certifications are not important. I say that because you have worshop manuals that show you how to do most of the install and take-off in their system. However, if you are working at a custom or just a regular car shop, I feel that the certifications may have more value.

I think as the oem’s continue to phase the ase cert out what good will they really be? From a service managers stand point if I have two applicants both with three year experience one factory trained vs ase I will go with the factory trained. Most after markets are not seeing the newer model cars but if I have a factory trained tech that I can retain for a few years then great. Now we are seeing these makes and models they had the training on. Ase is great for general knowledge but really will that get you by in real world. Also they require two to three years experience hands on before they will even certified you. If you have been doing your job for three years and can’t give basic knowledge then you need to find another field.

I never took the ASC certification but I know how to take a car part engine apart and put it back together and I never read one book about it because my uncle was a mechanic and my dad was too and a truck driver and I just know how to do it

I live in Georgia. I know a person who let their ASE go because the recertification costs $1, 700.00. What would be best for him to do? Can you really get paid well through your experience vs the ASE ?

The trick questions that try to cause the wrong answer on the test is technician a correct or is technician b correct or both correct or both wrong, none of the above, the pcv valve.😮

Important
the simple thing is you do not need ASE to get a job but you also need it for reputition build up and the pride of being an Automotive Technician be your own boss and for for the test. if toyota dont care about ASE is there problem not yours

I think if your employer is advertising ASE certified mechanics then they should be but you're right learn better by doing it versus reading about it...I do have a question for you if a shop is advertising ASE certified mechanics and that is reason for bringing it to that particular shop because you want compitant mechanics now after the work is done the vehicle is actually running worse now this is after paying 600$ for brake shoes and hydraulic flush. But come to find out not one mechanic is certified.. what can that person do legally I've given them opportunity to get right it's been back to the shop 3 times and still not right 🤬 I understand you have to pay good money for good mechanics but now I'm out of that money and truck is not even drivable
