This worked for me and I am running VirtualBox and Ubuntu

sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-utils virtualbox-guest-x11 virtualbox-guest-dkms

didn't worked for me at first but after following these steps. i restarted, then i went into settings, then display, then resolution = 1920 x 1080p (16:9), and done. it worked like a charm for me.

For 1920x1080p :
no need to restart the computer. after doing this just go to view -> virtual screen 1 -> select screen resolution 1920x1080p, after that right ctrl + f you will see ubuntu in fullscreen mode.

for everyone whose screen got even smaller: restart the system. go to settings>display>change the resolution to the resolution of your screen(mine was 1920x1080).

Thanks so much for this. It buggered my VM display to begin with but after selecting “auto-resize guest display” under the View header on virtual box it fixed it and now it’s full screen. Thought it would be worth mentioning that you may need to hit that (which is the same as host + A, I believe)

If anyone can't open their terminal: go to "settings" -> "language and region" -> change the language from your current language (mine was english USA) to some other (i changed it to english UK) -> restart -> boom works
