To anyone who tried this unsuccessfully: I had the same issue. So I did the whole process again but before opening the EA app to check, I restarted my PC.
I also had a second task called EA (but without the logo) open in the task manager, which I also ended, but I‘m not sure if I did that the first time too or not.
Now it works for me! :)

Thank you, this was very informative and straight to the point. I struggled my @ss off, I refuse to download all my games again on the new drive and the EA App just doesn't automatically detect the new directory with games in. I think the Origin App had this feature where it would detect the game and repair it.

i copied but now it thinks i dont have the game installed. cant figure out how to repair, done all what you said but i think i still need to download again... only one game in the registry for me and its not the one im trying to move. i messed something up. and now it thinks i dont have the game/2042 installed.
