This scene is a Masterclass in how to tell a joke.
Notice how Clark Griswald goes WAY OVERBOARD in saying MANY TIMES how old, Stonehenge is and how it will stand for more millennia. Notice that his wife rushes him by saying they have to get moving right away. Notice the look on Clark’s face when he imagines future generations visiting this place. As it falls, notice the reaction shots of people. EVERYTHING sets up the punchline when it all falls over.

I've visited Stonehenge but also I passed Salisbury Plain at 5 am with thick mist across the valley and wafting around in 1965 riding my motorbike Swansea to London overnight.

Ironically, Stonehenge really did close to the public in 1985, the same year this movie was made !

So THAT's why Nigel Tuffnel thought Stonehenge was only 18 inches high! 😉

Clark figured it out... The worlds oldest set of dominoes. They just needed that little push

I went to England, and saw Stonehenge, in 2015.

And this is why you don’t park anywhere near historical landmarks.
