The James Webb Space Telescope, a collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency, is set to launch later this month. Scientists say its technology makes it 100 times more powerful than the Hubble and could give it the ability to see back to the first galaxies in the universe. Illustration: Adele Morgan/WSJ

Webb isn’t without problems. First it has to launch, then when it reaches L2 it has to open all the way up without sticking and catching on itself. Then all the instruments have to be brought online and be calibrated. And there are no “do overs” like Hubble had. But if successful it will be an amazing step forward in astronomy.

Considering that we're kinda noobs as far as space is concerned, the James Webb is gonna surpass our imagination by eons

We spend almost $800 billion a year on defense. Imagine spending just a fraction of that to build a telescope 10x bigger than Webb. Imagine spending all that money on science and technology research. Where would we be as a nation today?

A telescope that can peer all the way back to the beginnings of the universe and verify life on other exoplanets. To say this is important is an understatement. How we got here and who or what else is out there are the most important questions for humanity.

soon we will find out our universe is older than 14 billion years and bigger than we thought

I love how these telscopes are capturing the lights from Billions of years ago today. That's how big our universe is.

Successful launch of the webb telescope would be the best Christmas present this year.

Perhaps the Webb telescope will peer so far into deep space that it will view itself from the posterior side ?

It's probably the focal point to realize we are not alone. Plus all the origin stuff. Exciting!

I've been waiting for James Webb to launch since nearly a decade ago. We're close to getting more answers :D

Can it take pictures of the solar system closest to ours ? Maybe there's a low intelligent type of life form we can see lol idk how it actually really works that would be cool

Thanks for uploading. I got the chance to witness a rocket launch in 2018. Unbelievable experience. I uploaded a pretty fun montage of the trip to my channel.

The biggest revolution in JWST is the ground imagery processing. Computing scientists dedicate entire field computation on astronomy. The current Hubble imagery has been enjoying the fame of powerful imagery processing, however, the new methods of onboard calibration on demand, like a pair of human eyes, makes JW become a supper Hubble, and the ground can (pre)process them live before the universe shifting.

Last I recall they were going to launch this 10 years ago. Launch it already.
