One user (zacharylechevalier202) reports they could get their 2020 Tacoma into temp check mode without a wire as their truck does not have a live connection in the OBD port 13. They just did the neutral drive back and forth.

Just completed this service early this morning after starting late yesterday afternoon . Something helpful to those who live in warm/hot climates who decide to perform this service when the engine has been running for hours. After several attempts to get the transmission into temperature check mode from 30 minute cool downs to over an hour, I decided after multiple attempts to let it sit overnight. That was the ticket. The truck did exactly like the video showed. I would encourage this service be done with a cold truck engine or slightly warm. The temperature check range is just too close to ambient to try it hot. Paperclip worked great. A gauge of wire smaller than 14 should also fit. Thanks!

All these vids are very good. I’m a 61 year old aerospace engineer who writes procedures and reviews training materials for ground and flight operations- so I believe I’m qualified to know what GOOD is. We could use you on our team to create training material.

I accidentally made the idiotic mistake of loosening my transmission oil pan plug instead of my engine oil pan drain plug while changing engine oil. Enough drained out that I had to refill it and this video saved my ass so thanks!

FYI, the newer gen 3s (probably 2020 and newer) don't require the OBD to be jumped when doing temp check. At least that's the case with my 2020 SR. Just start it up and do the back and forth between neutral and drive and the gear indicator will disappear without the "Christmas lights." I found out the hard way that the newer gen 3 Tacos don't even have a terminal in port 13 on the OBD!

I use to take my second gen Tacoma to the dealership. I have a third generation now thanks for sharing this will save time and avoiding the dealership is priceless.

Thank you for this video! I followed this video changing my fluid on my 22 and it literally fixed all my hard transmission shifting from the factory truck. It turned out it was low by a 1/4qt from the factory.

I was literally about to sell the truck bc of how bad it was shifting for a new vehicle and this was after multiple trips to the dealer filing complaints who assured me they checked the fluid while the truck still shifted awful and said this how these trucks drive. My suspicion is this dealers techs were either inconfident on the fluid check process for the tacoma or they just lied and didn't do it. Either way, check your transmission fluid if your brand new truck is shifting hard and don't believe the dealer when they tell you its how these truck drive.

Awesome, thank you!
Concise, everything you need to know in 5 minutes without any bs.
Appreciate this

Very clear message 😊
Here's what I do to check the temperature.
It sounds comical but it works great.
After and before filling the fluid, I take a meat thermometer with a long cord or Bluetooth. I use Bluetooth.
Take out the overflow plug. Use a high temp silicone plug from Amazon.
Insert the probe through the silicone plug and cork the hole. Fill with the fluid.
After it reaches between 104 to 113 degrees, you just Uncork and drain to trickle. You're complete. 😊
There's no hassle of trying to time the temperature with the vehicle computer.

That new pump you put a link to is gonna be a must have! Did transmission fluid today and there’s so much fluid in the traditional pump (tubes and the pump body) it’s actually hard to tell when you hit 3.5 quarts!

Wow - finally a tutorial that shows exactly how to get the tranny in fluid level checking mode. Good job!

Most thorough, to the point tutorial I've seen on YT (not just Taco trans fluid, but anything). Thank you! Well done.

Thanks so much for doing these videos! I had to replace my transmission oil pan a few weeks ago because the drain plug got stripped out and wished this video was available. You have no idea how much it means to a new wrencher to have a thorough and detailed video to follow along with and instill confidence to doing the job. Would love to request a video to replace u-joints on the 3rd gen!

This is the best video tutorial I've seen. Now, I feel like I'm confident in changing my transmission fluid. Very helpful video.

A lot of guys think the color is indicative of fluid condition… It is NOT!! You must send the sample in to be analyzed. The old Toyota WS had a tracer dye that changed color from RED to PURPLE when exposed to UV. This has been long discontinued (old Toyota bottles) but the new red dye (all atf starts out life clear when blended) simply wears out over time and changes color. Work on a few hundred of these Aisin transmissions and you will see WS is a superior fluid with units lasting well into the half a million mile mark with little maintenance! Great video for DIY folks 👍🏻

Wow you made this look really easy. This was the only maintenance procedure that I was going to go to the shop for, but after this video I'm confident doing it myself. Thanks a ton!

I did the transmission drain and fill, only 2 quarts came out of my 2016. It was low from the factory, I'm at 50K miles. The video was spot on, Thanks! FYI I refilled with Aisin fluid from Rock Auto. It shifts Great!

Perfectly described! I like the Christmas tree comment. Did mine at 50K. You're describing how to put in temperature mode was accurate and to the point! I used a paper clip, because I could not get the wire to stay in. Keep the lessons coming.

Absolutely fantastic videos! I do most of the maintenance on my 17 Taco, but have stayed away from the transmission. This is the best video I've seen that clearly explains the process of getting it into temp check mode and overfilling and draining to light dripping. Great job - I'm doing the next interval change!
