I Was 100% Wrong About the Fujifilm X100F

When the X100V came out, I was so excited that it had “fixed” all of the problems that I had with all of the other X100 series cameras up to that point. Turns out I was both wrong and right there. The X100F is actually an amazing camera that I’ve been using for the last year and is a really great option if you don’t want to spend the money on an X100V.

I had the X100F from it's initial launch to the release of the V. And while the V is technically better I hold so many good memories with the F. It was the tool that I learned the most with about the kind of photographer I am and what I enjoy about photography. And can I say something unpopular about the F? I think the lens is better. It has more character. The bokeh is smoother and more forgiving on skin. Shooting in jpeg with the right custom settings and that lens gave me some really filmic photos. As for the AF, ya it's not as good wide open but stopped down its extremely reliable. Also stopped down it's extremely sharp. I am starring at a print I made with it years ago now and it's really crazy how sharp it can be. Anyways, I regret every day I sold this camera. In fact, I will eventually buy it again someday.

The X100F is my perfect daily carry camera for family stuff and vacation, and I've even shot some assignment work with it. The film sims are gorgeous, especially Acros at higher ISO. I've made 20"x30" prints from this camera and they are beautiful. If it's a little soft at f/2 close up, I don't really care as long as there's an emotional connection to the moment captured.

We adore the X100 series and the F is no exception to that love. We love to see how you’ve recycled its use case to capture your adorable family’s daily life. The F certainly deserves to be in the hands of more photographers on the daily. Great Video Benj!

I love my X100F. I had no idea I needed this camera. It's my favorite camera for family and travel. The colors are amazing. I always enjoy a 35mm focal length. Love not having to worry about packing different lenses and just tossing this into any bag without taking up much space, without sacrificing quality.

I bought a used X100F last year as my first ‘real’ camera in many years and fell in love with it immediately. I has the right balance of hi-tech/high-quality and old school controls; reminds me of my old film cameras. I recently added a used Fuji X-T3, possibly the best camera deal out there at the moment, but in reality I still take most of my photos with the X100F because it’s with me all the time. (And I also shoot B&W jpegs, with RAWS for editing later.)

Thanks for reminding me about the X100. I absolutely adored my X100S until it gave up the ghost a few years ago. Providence dropped a Ricoh GR II into my hand shortly after the X100 died, but that camera is now acting up, so another X100 might be in cards — the F is around €1000 here in Europe.

Be well and keep shooting!

I started with the X100 just because I loved the look of it. My used model was a victim of the SAB issue fuji wouldn’t repair for free as I didn’t have the original proof of purchase so I decided to upgrade to the T which was far better than the original. The T served me well until I killed it in a flash flood. Insurance came to my rescue and replaced the T with the F. The F is still going strong I love it to bits it never disappoints me I’ve shot landscapes street indoor sports family everything and anything such a great camera. The V I definitely want it but I don’t need it. Liked and subbed cheers 📷❤️📷

This video came at a perfect time, Ben!

I almost purchased the X100v for $2, 000 (my wife is happy I didn't. Haha!) After watching this video I just held off on the X100v, and I managed to snag a Silver X100f on eBay with only 1400 shots for $950. Can't wait to finally own one of these!

I bought my Fujifilm X100F in December 2019 to have a modern, easy to carry 'travel/grab and go' digital camera and it suits that purpose admirably. Love the built-in film and filter simulations. If I have need for filters beyond the filter simulations: I use a 49mm to 52mm step-up ring so I can use the 52mm diameter filters in my collection. Also like the hybrid electronic/optical viewfinder: I leave mine in 'electronic' mode and use the viewfinder rather than the panel on the back of the camera; in effect you're 'seeing what the lens sees' much like a film SLR camera and all the information is right there in the viewfinder. And that it very closely resembles classic film rangefinder cameras with similar control placement is a plus and it has very good build quality. I'm very satisfied with mine and felt no need to upgrade to the X100V.

Thanks for bringing up the ethical reasons to buy used.

Another reason to purchase used is to not be so reckless with spent human labor. Everything we purchase cost an immense amount of human life to design, test, assemble, etc. With the magic of mass production and currency/labor cost leveraging we can afford these products (without the later everything would be as expensive as a Leica, maybe more). You don't have to be a luddite and reject new technology. But the obsession of faster/better can overshadow the state of the art we DO have.

I own a 1938 Leica III and apart from being a total jewel of a camera I often think of the lives that made this thing during a war. Even in peace time life is short and we should all appreciate the ingenuity and craft that goes into everything as well as the time out of someone's life it took to make it.

I’ve had the X100S, X100V and now went back to the X100F. Yes, it’s a heartbeat slower with AF, but the addition of the d-pad that was missing on the X100V and GFX50R really helps navigate. I don’t want to over-romanticize it, but the lens is definitely a little softer and more film-like. I use the standard Fujifilm 49mm MRC Protector filter and with the lens natural halation, it looks like a Moment Cinebloom 5% If a new version is coming that has the W235 battery from the XT4/XT5/XH2/XH2s/XS-20, I’ll get it and keep them both.

Recently I found a new love for my X100F with the Fuji teleconverter, TCL-X100. The combo works very well and now my X100F has a 50mm equivalent lens.

It’s so crazy that you uploaded this video bc last night I bought a mint condition x100f on eBay for $825. I really wanted the x100v so badly for a camera for me to always have on me instead of xt2 but I couldn’t justify spending so much money on it, especially on resell pricing. I am so excited to get the camera and this just gave me all of the validation I needed hahaha! Great video! <3

love my X100F. I want a V, not gonna lie. But they're nearly impossible to get at the moment and on the used market they're going for over MSRP, which is insane.

I had and loved the X100F. I was fortunate enough to find an X100V about a month ago. It is definitely an upgrade over the f in terms of the lens sharpness especially wide open. But, I find it interesting that so many owners of the V use a black pro mist or similar filter. I feel that these filters give a similar effect (haziness/halation) that I did not enjoy with the F. So, my advice is that if you enjoy the look of photos you see taken with a black pro mist or similar filter, then the F is the camera for you!

I have a X100F and it’s also permanently set up for Acros. I just wish they could’ve had an orange filter too because this is the filter that lives on my Q2M.

This is a great camera. I sold a DSLR for the x100f some years ago and it really helped improve my photography and I absolutely fell in love with the rangefinder style. So much in fact I bought a Leica m8 and have sold the x100. I have no regrets but lots of fond memories of this camera. I am tempted to get the original x100 for a “rough and ready” camera to leave in the car or a coat to go everywhere.

A buddy of mine gifted my daughter a Pentax Q7 and she uses that thing all the time to take pictures of everyday life. It’s the coolest and cutest thing to see. 🤘🏼

Great to see videos on older cameras. I think most high quality cameras made after sometime 2012-2014 is really good enough for anything even today.
I bought the X100 (first one) after learning about its existence in 2019 for about $250. After a while it had me move from Canons altogether with the great JPEGs, great RAW files, and all day carry size. I found that by prefocusing and using the AF lock on the back I could get the shots I wanted just as often as with the Canons, even of the kids, but with less tossaway photos - more keepers. Upgraded to the X100T later, and suddenly owned much more of the Fuji X system. My only drawback is that it (as all AF cameras metering off the sensor) sometimes second guesses the timing of the shot. Solution: Leica M. So the X100 was sort of the gateway to that system. Still keep the X100T with an WCL because of good quality and handling vs size/weight (a good 28mm eqv setup).

Great video. I’ve been thinking of picking up one of the 100 series cameras, but as of now I haven’t been able to justify it. Your comments about jpegs hit home, and I was prompted me to reveal my dirty little secret. I own a number of film cameras and still shot film regularly. But I became enamored with the Fujifilm line of cameras around the time that the XT-2 came out. Since then I’ve also owned the XT-30 and currently own an XT-4 and and a X Pro 3. My confession is that I really love the film simulations and while I always record in both jpeg and raw I almost never end up using the raw files. I mostly exhibit my photos only on Instagram and Facebook and use the Lightroom on my I-Pad to edit them when the need it. I often toggle back and forth between Provia and Acros in the simulations and have been perfectly happy with the resulting jpeg files. Thanks for your video and keep up the good work.
