I’m a guy that owns and operates his own comic book publishing company and nothing annoys me more when you say your doing commissions and you don’t leave your email for me to contact you. I’m not going to google or hunt you down just to ask you for a job and stay in contact with you.

Highly recommend this to artists all the time: If you're serious about selling your art you need to have a dedicated storefront where people can purchase your artwork. Taking commission work through DM and email is messy and involves a lot of back and forth. People lose interest and change their minds in that time. Link your website/store in your bio. Having a store listing and contact form on your website where people can purchase original art or inquire about commissions makes this process more streamlined and professional. Share good examples of some of your best commissions on platforms you're active on to encourage more people to seek you out for commission work in the future.

Hi Trent, I'm curently working in an Indie proyect as a Concept Artist with other former alumni of the school where I studied Concept art. I'm following your advice that getting projects under your belt and since me and another Artist are doing all the work I'm dabbling in lots of different types of Concept design and improving my skills daily. This is the time where my 2D skills have improved the most, apart from Mentorships since the pressure to bring your A game to the table and not waste time doesn't allow to get sidetracked. Still have to master the craft of salesmanship to promote my things... But thanks Trent. You, Anthony Jones and HArdy Fowler have been a massive inspiration and helped me kick my ass into gear.

New subscriber, but I’ve been learning so much from your videos. I just graduated and while the industry is in a bit of a lull here in Canada I am looking to try and build myself up, my skills and my business. Your advice of recording everything you draw is so invaluable and I can already see how it’s making things easier to be a content creator. Love your practical advice!

The door-to-door kid's attitude multiplied by the wisdom in this video = 💪🖌💰 Pure gold!

Great topic, and thanks for the clarity Trent. I was considering doing commissions while I work on updating my concept art portfolio and work on my personal projects, just for extra cash. I thought I was procrastinating for not having "set up shop" yet, so to speak, but maybe it's better for me to focus on my main goal. It's a tough choice since jobs are on the low right now.

Great tips! Especially the ones about a) making sure the customer can see what they're getting and b) making it easy to purchase/pay for the art. It's important to think about the entirety of the customer experience, not just the exchange of the art itself. Thank you for sharing.

12:07 "Ketchoope" and "Moostarde" 😆 Will there be a "Mayoonayse" at some point?

Kid - comes to sell his artwork
Trent - sells him his "artist's fundamentals bundle". xD

I am at the the midpoint of the video (8:41 to be precise) and you did mention making payments easier for the client. It is something i wish i could do, however due to political circumstances, its really difficult to accept forms of payment internationally unless you have some sort of complex workaround (i am from Zimbabwe and there's a whole thing involving sanctions so....yeah). But apart from that i have been putting a lot of what you have been saying in your videos and I work fulltime at a creative agency. Thank you for this!

Great information. I've often thought about a lot of the points you've brought up but have struggled to be consistent with executing anything. Thanks for the reminders and I love seeing you speed paint while you talk. I really love seeing your characters build up.

everytime I think about it I'm like "who the fck would buy my art?". I guess I'm doomed ( great video btw).

Wow! Thanks for answering Trent!❤ I’ve been following for a few years now, hang out in the discord. Im really excited (and nervous) to start building my resume and defining my portfolio this fall when both my kids will finally be in school. Thanks for the tips! Can’t wait to play your game!

Thanks for your advice! Seeing a new video from you is an awesome way to wake up and start the day! Im excited that you mentioned that handpainted 3d models is something that is in demand now a days, I noticed that too last time I was at PAX East. For UI art, what kinds of things do companies need done for that job? Immediately I thought about the boarders around the game screen in Warcraft, or Starcraft, but what are some other elements that youve noticed?

Being an artist as a careeer is like being an actor as a career. Very very few seem to make it, a lot of it also comes down to dumb luck. Only difference is the celebrity artist makes a pittance comparatively.

Trent! I love this! But please can you go back to making some more videos on Sketchbook Pro? I just bought a copy off of the Microsoft store (but I've been using a basic standard version when it was free for a few years.).

"will you hire me to do concept art?"
"do you have a portfolio?"
"my mom says I'm a really good artist"
"do you have a portfolio?"
"I can send you a pic of my art work my mom has on her refrigerator"
