Altair Astro TriBand Review

The Altair Astro TriBand filter is a triple bandpass narrowband imaging filter designed for use with One-Shot Colour Cameras for astrophotography. It achieves this by allowing Hydrogen Alpha, Oxygen III and Hydrogen Beta through to the colour camera's sensor. But, what is it like to use and live with?

In this Altair Astro TriBand Review I'll be breaking down what it's like to own. Why to use one and where to use one as well as my BIGGEST reservation about the filter. After all - nothing is perfect in this world.

Whilst you're watching, don't be alarmed by the packaging or the filter ring itself, as I mention in this review; it is because I have an early production model before they had finished finalizing the design. I have the Altair astro Quadband filter and am very pleased with it. Shooting from a Bortle 6 site. I am also happy with the AR coating, it does a better job than all my other filters. Thanks for the review, great job.

Great info, Ruz! I do not have this filter, but the Optolong dual band l-enhance. I will use it finally this weekend on my rig with the DSLR attached and will let you know about the outcome of it. Thanks again for sharing!

Nice review, I’m thinking of getting a OSC to go with my #AtikOne mono camera, because clear nights seem to be getting rarer and I keep ending up with half finished data sets. But, every time I raise this on forums, I keep getting the usual negativity and the experts saying it’s slower and not as good as mono. We all know that mono is more sensitive but it’s no good if you never get a finished image. So thanks for the review

Why would a quad band be better for Bortle class 4 and the triband for more light polluted skies?

I wonder if this filter's halos can be controlled with the addition of some other kind of filter like an IR/UV filter behind it... Just a thought to experiment with.

You'd only use those subs as a mask for the stars to help with halos an bloat. Don't ask me how to specifically pull that off. You know my secret for controlling star sizes ;)
