Hi! I just read Dorian Gray for an English project, and while researching, I came across this video, and I love it! I also love the book itself, despite hating nearly every character in it. I think that maybe that's why I love it so much, it evoked such a strong reaction that I became attached to it. I thought you bringing up that people bring their own sins to the book was really interesting and I definitely agree with you. I think Oscar Wilde is an endlessly fascinating person and I wish he had written more novels, plays just aren't the same. Like you said: they rely so heavily on dialogue that I believe something in lost on them. Not that I don't love plays! I just like novels a bit more. This is a lovely video, and you're lovely too! <3

Why do you like the ending so much? I was surprised at how little there was on the very last pages, though brilliantly written I expected more gross images and there were only a few likes when the servants found him

I'm glad you finally got round to making a video for this channel, a brilliant review :)

Great channelling of that A-level, Lizzie. I hope to see a review of the Wife of Bath's tale within the year.

I loved Dorian Gray, although a lot of people in my class especially seemed to kind of totally hate it by the end of the course. Maybe it's because I read it fairly leisurely before we studied it, but I found it really enjoyable as a story, before studying it. Studying it then just layered up my appreciation of it... I need to buy a nice copy of it of my own, really.

Your little daleks <3 I just finished this book, I really appreciated your point about the good dialogue being due being to Oscar Wilde being a wonderful playwright! Subscribed :)

was it not confusing? I was worried that having studied the book I would go too in-depth?

No I don't think you did go too in-depth. If you did you explained it well, it wasn't confusing at all

Too be honest, I didn't think this book was that "gay". I mean, Dorian was supposed to be a strikingly handsome man. I think the fact that the characters who worshiped him, believed that being attractive was the most important thing in the world, means that they weren't really gay for him, I think they just had a man crush for him & ultimately wished they were him. I think people saw homosexual allusions simply because Oscar Wilde was gay. Just knowing that can affect your take on the writing.

I'm pretty sure Wilde was not a homosexual.. He was possibly bisexual but in my opinion probably more pansexual. I think he loved his wife towards the beginning of their relationship(based on letters he has written her) and then fell out of love. In my opinion

Homoerotic Undertones is the name of my autobigoraphy.
Great work though seriously, now we all have to do a better job. Thanks for that.

You should read a Clive Barker story called "In The Hills the Cities". It's so NOT gay!

Okay so look, I don't agree with the homosexual lifestyle (there's not much I can do about it rather than just say a prayer for ppls' souls) but that wouldn't mean that I couldn't read this book without being disgusted. And in fact, when I was reading this book, I didn't see any substantial evidence of homosexuality. I mean, yes, it did cross my mind once or twice, but I think that a lot of the love that you see between men in this book is entirely non-romantic. Forrealzies, can't men just be friends?!?!

I don't mean to be presumptuous but Americans don't have anywhere near the social or historical awareness to make a review of this quality. The culture of America is just awful. Thanks for the conceptual analysis.
