[OLD] Why is Tumblr so Hated?

Out of all of the Social Media sites, it always seems like Tumblr gets a bad rap for all things from fandoms to harassment, but is it that bad?

I use Tumblr and reblog funny pictures/stories. But, holy crap, there is some crazy people there. I think we all know that infamous story where a girl attempted suicide because she was being harassed for drawing a character from Steven Universe wrong. Also, I have to constantly block porn bots every week, which is becoming an annoyance.

I use Tumblr for the memes and the fandoms, and I gotta agree with you. Tumblr can be a terrible place, but it also has lot of good stuff. Good video as always.

it's always weird to see the ugly side of tumblr, couse i've only had a positive experience for 4+ years. if you follow the right people and engage in kind fandoms then it's all fun and your biggest problem will be all those ridiculous updates that staff used to pull off weekly at some point

I'm glad you brought up how blindly people can be on tumblr. Yeah yeah, sjws and such blah blah blah, but the main problem is how gullible some people are. Skepticism is what made tumblr a much better place in my experience, considering that most "stories" are fake

As a person who doesn't use tumblr at all, id say this attention & note system is completely fucked up. Which is a pity, as less and less artists use deviantArt, and there simply is not a single popular alternative for art of all sorts.

Oh boy sit down it’s time for tumblr horror story time: a friends gf cheated on him and they broke up over it. They are both cosplayers and we’re going to be attending the same con. Well a week before the con a friend of the ex got on tumblr with some edited screen shots and accused him of being a pedophile, a rapist, all sorts of slander to try and start a witch hunt. The post went viral and he had people stalking him during the con posting pictures of all his actions. She also posted all his social media accounts (even the MMOs that he played and what servers he played on) he had to delete his Facebook to get away from the harassment. She even posted where he worked and told people to “get him” there. He had to quit his job due to threats against his safety, and is perma-banned from a local con as a direct result of this slanderous post.

Never have I seen a more judgmental and vile community than the likes of tumblr. There are times when I agree with and understand the social justice focused arguments (or just stuff like why using the word "triggered" in the context of being offended is wrong.

But the sheer unrestrained malice that these tumblr communities hold toward anyone they disagree with is awe inspiring. If you don't condone harassing, threatening or outright trying to murder someone who so much as drew fan art that they find problematic, you get labeled a sympathizer or apologist or whatever. They don't understand that it's possible to criticize or call someone out on that stuff, without condoning assaulting and terrorizing them.

Don't even get started on their inability to separate fiction from reality. The amount of times I've heard the Steven Universe fandom accuse someone of being homophobic or ableist just because of a critique of a fictional character that had nothing to do with that. But nope, because they feel they get representation from that character, that representative trait is their one defining trait and they will defend that character to the death like it's their literal child.

They have a horribly black and white view of things and will dredge up anything you did ten years ago from their little receipt blogs to use as ammunition for why you're a terrible person. It doesn't matter if you've become a better person. Either you're just doing it for brownie points, or it shouldn't have happened at all. No one can learn or become more open minded.

I think tumblr angers me way more than 4chan the likes of 4chan because that place is just a bunch of people dicking around and not taking anything seriously. Tumblr on the other hand takes things way too seriously and those people go out of their way to prove how hostile they are, all under the name of "justice".

Anyone else don't like those AU posts about some super lame quirky idea like "OMG A STORY ABOUT SOME STEREOTYPES BUT THEY GET REVERSED THERES SOME ZOMG WEIRD TWIST SOULMATES OMG SO AWKWARD THEY WORK IN A COFFEE SHOP MEET CUTE BUT NOT CUTE UWU" and then there's a billion notes like "OMG YES", when the idea really isn't that great?
